Does Anyone Take Kelp Tablets

I went to a metabolism centre recently and they discovered that my metabolism was running really quite low so they suggested that I take Kelp tabelts.
Anyone had any success with this?

I just started taking them on the recommendation of a friend who lost a lot of weight. It's too soon to know if they are helping. If you try it, we should compare notes later to see if it helps.

Kelp Tablets

Hi Peg,

Yes I am just starting them so we will see how they go I believe that you only take them if you are not exercising during the day and before meal times as whilst your eating your metabolism is working. I guess you just take them when you think your body is not doing much.
It sounds good if there is something to kick your metabolism up if your not exercising.
Good luck :D

I didn't know that they only help if you're not exercising. I am exercising, so do you think it's not worth my while to take them? (Even though I exercise, my metabolism is still very slow).

I was interested in this posting so I did a search and found this highly self contradictory information:

Kelp, a sea vegetable, has been acknowledged as a detoxifier, a balanced supplement, and a healing plant. Kelp is a good source of many vitamins and minerals, but is most noted for its assimilable iodine content. Iodine is transported directly to the thyroid gland where it is converted into the hormone Thyroxine, which helps to regulate basal metabolism and therefore, is of use to slimmers to avoid the plateau effect. It contains over 30 minerals and vitamins.

The electrolytic magnetic action of kelp releases excess body fluids from congested cells and dissolves fatty wastes through the skin, replacing them with depleted minerals, particularly potassium and iodine. As iodine boosts thyroid activity, food fuels are used before they can turn into fatty deposits.

With all of this information, it would seem that anyone with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) would leap at the chance to use kelp. However, many nutritionists are unanimous in their belief that the components of kelp tablets have no basic effect on the health of the user. Most of the components are found in a normal diet and show no further beneficial effect on nutrition. In fact, if too much iodine (kelp) is taken, the effect on the user may be deleterious. Conceivably, the kelp portion of the tablet could furnish an excessive amount of iodine beyond what is normally needed or permissible. Lastly, research showed that kelp has no effect in treating obesity, which is caused mainly by an excessive intake of food and a lack of exercise.

If a user has an underactive thyroid and/or is obese, consult your healthcare professional for an evaluation and diet and exercise management that includes beneficial supplements to a healthy diet.

Thought you may be interested. Keep us posted guys - I'm interested in anything which will give me an edge.

Interesting article I guess if it was that simple no one would have a metabolism problem. :)
I will take the tabelts liberally for around a couple of months then test my metabolism again and see if anything has changed.
I also thought since the Japenese ate so much seaweed it has to be a good thing for you!
Cheers

That is an interesting article. I do believe that I have an underactive thyroid because I have all of the symptoms, but the tests come out in the 'normal' range. Atkins says that sometimes happens and you should have more sophisticated tests if you have the symptoms, but my HMO will not pay for it. So, I'm self-diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and was hoping the kelp would help. I noticed the article also said the overweight is caused by too many calories for the amount of exercise. Without at least 3 hours of cardio per week I would GAIN weight on 1200 calories! I never lost until I started low carb, but have been stalling -- just looking for something that will help.

Hi Peg,

We sound a little a like when I first had my metabolism checked i was only burning 800 calories per day that is resting and I should for my stats be burning 1300.
So the clinic that I went to suggested that I have some further blood tests done and I had mentioned that the usual GP has done everything and they say everything is normal.
So with there advice I saw a specialist in this field and my tests came back that my adrenal gland was not working was almost not existant ( yet GP was happy) .
He said that I should have been feeling very tired and would have problems maintaining my weight. Well he was spot on.
So he made me up what they call troches with a mixture of some sort to increase my DHEA which is now up at the level where it should be. And guess what? I dont feel tired anymore and I had my metabolism checked again and the last reading was 1200 so I am nearly there. Also they believe if I took the kelp that would boost it some more.
At a rate of 800 calories a day you can imagine how quick the weight will go on when I was probably eating 2000 calories!
I dont know if this is available to you but you might be able to check it out in your country.
Cheers
