Schwartzbein and GERD/Acid Reflux?

I've had horrible GERD for about 9 months, with upper-respiratory symptoms... dry cough, choking and dry heaving. Meds do not work, I've been on Nexium for about 7 months... and Prevacid and Tagament before that. An ENT told me last week to cut out carbs and sugar, and read the Schwartzbein Principle. He said my GERD should disappear within 3-4 weeks.

So I'm giving it a shot. Has anyone tried this? I am at my wits end.

Thank you!

My husband takes cimetidine twice a day for reflux, but was also eating a LOT of Tums. Since low-carbing, he rarely has to eat any Tums, but is still taking his prescription stuff. Don't know what would happen if he stopped--maybe after he loses all the weight he wants to, he'll try it.

Hope it helps you, too!

GERD

Hi,

I've never been diagnosed with GERD but I think I may have had it. I had stopped following the Schwarzbein diet and was eating stuff I shouldn't. I began waking up at night with my esophagus and throat burning. I tried Zantac and Pepcid AC. They helped a little, but I still was in a lot of pain and couldn't sleep.

My mother told be that she had heard that a low carb diet is an effective treatment for GERD. I went back on the Schwarzbein plan, and I began to see a difference within a week. I haven't had any problems for a month now.

I never have visited the doctor about this because it cleared up so fast when I cut out the carbs.

Good luck, I hope this works out for you.
