Black Gold

1 Attachment(s)
I have just returned from Dublin where to my complete surprise I found myself in the Guinness factory with a pint of Guinness in my hand. I think the only explanation is that I was abducted by aliens and transported there and some bizarre experiment was being conducted on me.

Guinness is a low carb beer...honest!.....believel me.....I have tested it severeal times to make sure.

5.2 carbs for a 12oz serving

For those who may wish to retrace my wobbly steps around the Temple Bar area of Dublin I have found a good guide to drinking Guinness.

1 Choose your pub carefully. A pint of Guinness does not appreciate loud music, loud people or bright flashing lights.

2 Ask politely for a pint of Guinness. Depending on the pub, it is possible to catch the barmans eye and just mouth the word "pint" silently, he will translate this accurately.

3 The barman will fill the glass between 70% and 80% capacity. It will then be put to the side for a few moments to allow it "to settle". Once the brownish liquid has almost turned to a solid black the barman will then fill the rest of the glass. NB: do not under any circumstances take the glass before it is filled. Some tourists seem to think that the settling stage is the final stage and walk away with an unfinished pint. At this point the locals will fall about and you will be the cause of endless mirth.

4 Once you have received your pint, find a comfortable stool or seat, gaze with awe into the deep blackness, raise the pint to your mouth and take a large mouthful. Be firm.

5 A good pint can distinguished by a number of methods. A smooth, slightly off- white head is one, another is the residue left on the inside of the glass. These, surpise surprise, are known as rings. As long as they are there you know your're okay.

A science of rings is developing - the instance that comes to mind is determining a persons nationality by the number of rings (a ring is dependent on a swig of Guinness each swig leaving it's own ring). An Irishman will have in the region of 5-6 rings (they pace themselves), we English will have 8-10 rings, an American will have 17-20 (they sip) and an Australian won't have any at all as they tend to knock it back in one go!

6 As you near the end of your pint, it is the custom to order another one. It is a well known fact that a bird does not fly on one wing.

7 Locate another pub carefully, by putting one foot in the gutter it will guide you along the road. You have now become one with the Guinness and also do not like loud noises, loud people, and bright flashing lights.

8 repeat from step 2

LOL

Sound like you had fun :) I have great respect for anyone who can drink Guinness (henceforth referred to as "Motor Oil"). I guess it is an acquired taste, sort of like Jose Cuervo (my weakness). I tell you what, you can have my Motor Oil, if you give me your Jose Cuervo ;)

>>"5.2 carbs for a 12oz serving"

I'm pleasantly surprised! Not bad at all.

I believe a UK pint is 20 oz, which would contain 8.6 g of carb, correct?

Now if only Strongbow was as low in carbs - I do enjoy a good snakebite.

Black Gold vs Cuervo Gold

For Cuervo Gold you need scantily clothed individuals in their early twenties drinking Cuervo margaritas and avidly partying to latin rhythms as the sun goes down in a tropical paradise.

For Black Gold you need Michael Flaherty leaping through the pub window followed by 36 tap dancing damsels with their arms glued to their sides, drinking Guiness from a straight glass listening to a drunken fiddle player and an old man with a tin whistle as the sun goes down obscured by a tobacco haze over a traffic island in O'Connel Street.

No Contest

I knew that! In fact, one Low Carb Luxury's newsletter devoted a whole page to the issue of Low Carb Beers. Guinness enjoys an extremely high level of respect in France. How do you make that low-carb determination by yourself though?

Hello All

Nice to see visitors to our country enjoy Guinness so much. Just to chip in, do you know that over hear a doctor will prescibe a bottle of Guinness on occassion for older people to kep them regular? Yep true, Guinness really is 'Good for you'.
Also, Guinness's unique head is made in part from seaweed which gives the consistency to the pint.
You can buy draught Guinness in cans now which contains a widget in the bottom which explodes to life when you open the can giving you a better glass than the original bottled stuff.
But there really is no better pint than one which comes from an Irish Pub. Secret? A fresh barrell lasts in a pub a very short time and the pumps are cleaned through daily. Often wondered why you're Guinness elsewhere does'nt taste or look or feel the same as the one you had in Grafton St? Because it has been sitting there for two months in the same opened barrel.
Best way to enjoy a Pint? Rustpot was more or less bang on target, however if having a meal and a pint, it has got to be seafood. Nothing comes close to this combination.

Ah Guinness, it is the only beer I have ever really liked. My husband can't drink the stuff. Tells me it tastes bitter and heavy. I told him you have to develop the palate for it :)

It is hard to explain to someone what Guinness tastes like. I miss the stuff. Really. But I swore off alcohol over a year ago and haven't touched a drop since.

Drink a pint for me Rustpot :)

my heart goes beat beat beat

and my mouth if loving the fact that it can be reunited with it's old friend. While in TX I lived with an irishman from Dublin and developed a taste for it. But only at certain places, due to the fact that it needed to be FRESH!!!!

AHHH maybe tonight I will indulge and remember!! :rheart:

Nice post! I'm very pleased to find out that Guiness has that few carbs. I've been indulging in an occasional glass of red wine (my favorite libation next to Guiness). I haven't looked it up but I'm sure the average cabernet has a good amount of carbs per glass.

Shellyf34 Fri, May-31-02 15:06

Your in luck Kally!

A 4 oz class of DRY red wine has 1.252 grams of carbs (www.fitday.com). But remember alcohol will be burned before your own fatty acids, so during that time wieght loss will slow.

AH, RustPot! that is right fine news bout a good pint o' Guiness, Aye? Makes me want to jot on down to me Pub and have them pull me a pint staight away! Sliante!

Might be joining you on the other side of the pond within the year, as my folks are looking at buying a farm (with self catering cottages on the property) in Somerset (close to Weston Super-Mare). But my Dad has to work for a couple years here to retire, and they would need us to go over and run it for them in the meantime. I know, how awful for us! ;)

Cheers,

Shelly

Sorry Doods

Spur of the moment thing to take a day trip from Holyhead.

Wanted to see the Book of Kells at Trinity. Took the tour bus and found myself at the Guinness store.

Next time you can give me the guided tour in Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty. And the guinness is the best in the world :daze:

Doodle Sat, Jun-01-02 10:23

My Dad lives in Trinity... He is a Prof there and has rooms... well caves really, they are so dark and old.
Ok, i forgive you Rust, but do it again and you are LC toast.
Doods. ;)

Oh, and I live just down the road from where the Holyhead boat comes in.
