ketostix boycott?

Anyone else totally refuse to even start using these devil sticks?

I mean since i joined here in May i do not know how many posts i have seen of people having a heart attack because these sticks are not purple, pink, white, lite pink, lite purple etc...

I personally believe that no one needs these devices there are so many other things that tell you that you are in ketosis and the stick is just one more thing we can use to throw us off of this WOE..

We all used escuses to get overweight and never used the ketostix to make sure you were not in ketosis on the way up did we?

Did we weigh ourselves everyday sometimes several times and complained we only gained 2 lbs or lost 6 lbs since this morning what am i doing wrong?

I think if you put to much thought on all these external things to verify yourself is setting up for failure and second guessing of this WOE..

You all know how to eat LC or at a minimum know where to look to know what to eat on a Low Carb WOE and we all KNOW when we cheat and do not need a stix to tell you right?

If you feel you need another way to spend money buy another steak or more veggies instead of the stix's. Now if you are Diabetic that is another story but for the majority of us I personally believe they are not needed.

Ok sorry been on several forums today and the ketostix thing has been irritating me since i started and found out how much they cost and how little they really told me, purple, pink, why are they this color, ummmm dehydration, to much water, water to late in evening, water to close to dinner, to much sodium etc.. non of which tells you truly why it is one color or the next...

I say eat good and the low carb and ketosis will take care of itself....

ok off my slightly off kilter soap box..:)

Hmmm....
I've never tried them, but was considering it out of curiousity. They're selling for $2.99 for 100 sticks on Ebay. You might be right though... it could be just one more thing to be neurotic about! :)

not to mention that if you are on singulair it doesn't change colors at all

i have used them when traveling or sometimes when i come back from traveling but not an every day thing. i can now tell when im in ketosis without them by the awful breath. anyway if you do buy them, buy the bayer brand, those from ebay dont seem to work as well. i check the date on them, and keep them sealed and out of the bathroom no moisture when i have used them. i buy 100 from the pharmacist for 18 dollars and have had them forever. just my opinion when they are any color from pale pink to dark purple i have successfully lost inches and pounds.

Never have and never will. I had to throw my scale out cause I was obsessed with it. I need strips to tell me how Im doing like I need a hole in the head..lol

Lammie22 Thu, Feb-05-04 20:11

They can be encouraging, but on the other hand, they are too dangerous for me. I have cheated because I found I was not in ketosis, and thought "what the heck". So I haven't replenished my supply.

Lindym Thu, Feb-05-04 20:27

I'm having enough problems with the "devil scales". I don't need anything else to mess with my mind! Between ratios, %, and weight my head is spinning.

Are keto sticks discouraging??????

Keto sticks was discouraging to me. I have never been in the purple yet. I was using them continuously thinking that I would eventually see purple. I think that if you keep your body hydrated like you should, by drinking plenty of water , you may never see purple. I was using the keto sticks and could not figure out why I was not in ketosis yet. I quit using them. I was also weighing myself everyday and that was discouraging. I have not weighed for 2 weeks but I can tell that my clothes fit better. I am afraid that if I get on the scales that I will only be discouraged again.

I don't rely on them, just use them occassionally out of curiousity. Basically, I can be in major ketosis and still not lose weight, so they don't do me a bit of good. I gotta cut the calories a bit to get the weightloss going.

Jeanne Sch Thu, Feb-05-04 22:57

I use the ketosis sticks when I don't seem to be losing any weight (I only weigh myself once a week). I'm not an obsessive personality so I only use it as a tool to give me direction with my diet. I will also be using something in the future that is much more accurate - my grandmother's extra glucose monitor and extra supplies. Again, just as a tool occasionally when I'm stalling and can't pinpoint what food seems to be the aggravator. I like tools and I especially like anything that has a gauging effect, numbers are cool! :)

No sticks for me. Did them occasionally when first on the plan back in 2001.

And I only weigh myself once a week, here at work where we have a "doctor's office" type scale.

And I don't obsess about the scale.

But I loooooove my measuring tape!

Claudius Fri, Feb-06-04 08:52

I have 3 different scales at home and I don't think any of them are accurate. One is my friend and always shows me to be 15lb less than I am. Depending on the occasion, I may step on that one. The other 2 are wacked and spaced out on mechanical crack. One day I get a reading of 200, next day I am 215 and the next 192. I mean unless I eat like an anaconda where I gorge myself on say a small gazelle, I have no idea how such variations can exist. Needless to say as with those blasted Kitosticks, I pretty much have stopped relying on those methods and just use how I fit in my pants.

However, I am willing to pimp out my good scale that shows me 15 lbs less if anyone wants. Cheap too! US and Canada only though... hehe

Claudius you crack me up

Claudius Fri, Feb-06-04 09:11

I take it that's a no for pimping out my scale? Doh... stick to my day job.

atlee Fri, Feb-06-04 10:15

Never used them, not even once, in a year and a half. I told myself I'd worry about checking for ketosis if I didn't lose any weight, or if I got stalled, but never needed to. As I learned more about the sticks and ketosis in general, it just seemed silly -- you can be in ketosis and not lose any weight, and you can not be in ketosis and still lose weight. What's the point in worrying about it, if you're doing the things you can control like eating right?
