Asian Beef Lettuce Wraps
1 head of ice burg lettuce, pull off some leaves.
1 Lb of ground beef 1/4 Cup of soy sauce or Wheat free tamari 1-3 tsp of sweetener depending how sweet you like it 2 cloves of garlic, chopped finely or pressed 1 med. onion diced Red pepper flakes (to taste) 1 Tbl of grated ginger Optionally: chopped cabbage 2 Cups or so Cook the ground beef and onions until they're done. Mix together soy, sweetener, garlic, red pepper, ginger then pour over the ground beef. Add cabbage. Cook until cabbage is nice and soft or if you omit the cabbage, cook until soy sauce has pretty much evaporated. Let it cool a bit. Then to serve take a lettuce leaf and put some of the meat mixture in the middle and wrap it up. |
Oh..........this sound like those lettuce wraps from Pei Wei......I just love those. I am going to try these tonite. I have some of those ubiquitous shiritake noodles that I think I will add to this because, #1-I think that the Pei Wei ones have those bean thread noodles in it and #2 I bought a bunch of them and havent really found a way to use them in a pleasing way...This may be the ticket! I made these for supper last night. Very good. I tried it first without those shiritake noodles and then with. I cant say that the noodles add anything to this dish...I was hoping that maybe I had found a use for them...alas, they don't improve the recipe. This recipe is good on its own. It even passed the picky eater test (my daughter). Thanks again for the recipe.

I kind of made these again last nite for supper......well, I took the idea of them and played fast and loose with it and it was still very good.
I used ground pork instead of hamburger. I added about 1 tbsp of fish sauce. I used 3 stalks of celery instead of cabbage and with the celery I just tossed it in the end to keep it crunchy and I crushed up some dry roasted non salted peanuts and sprinkled over the top. Ate it on iceburg lettuce leaves and it just dissapeared. I had remembered that the Pei Wei lettuce wraps had peanuts. I hope this recipe keeps bumped up as it is a versitile keeper. Nanci |

I was thinking cilantro would be a good addition, maybe a few mint leaves. The ones I have had commercially (PF Changs) had ground chicken in them. I just used beef because it was really cheap. :) |
I think PF Changs is the upper end of the same franchise as Pei Wei......We don't have them in my town, but when we visit our daughter in Vegas we used to always eat in one on the way out of town and always got the lettuce wraps to share. I think you are right about the cilantro. I refuse to buy it as it spoils so fast in the fridge and my garden isnt ready yet. I will try that when I make it next if I break down and buy it.
This recipe came along in absolutely the right time as one of my workers alwas brings in a case of lettuce a week. I was running out of iceberg ideas. I wish he would bring in a case of cabbage....I would make kraut. |
Ok, I need to stop making these for awhile. I can go through about 1/2 pound of ground beef in a sitting on these suckers.

I made this again last nite....kinda. I used ground turkey (yuck) and fresh bean sprouts and cabbage shreds. It was quite good. the soy and fishsauce that I use are strong enough to mask that ground poultry taste. I have a mental block about ground poultry and I probably wouldnt have been able to tell if I didn't know. I just love this recipe!!!

Quick and easy
great use of hamburger
LOVED IT Fast and easy total cook time was about 20 minutes Thanks so much :wave: didn't have any cabbage on hand so I used bell pepper as substitute (worked great), used the fish sauce 1 tbsp and 1 tbsp oyster sauce. 1 packet of splenda instead of 3. Washed salt off hand full of peanuts, mildly crushed them and added. Wrapped in lettuce |

hello, may i make a suggestion here. when you have a small bunch they you need to keep fresh for 7 days or so, take a cup and put a little water in it and put the cut cilantro in it and then just put in the fridge. keep an eye on it as the water evaporates. i have a bunch in there that i bought 8 days ago and it's still fresh. :thup: |
