Bacon, bacon, beggin
Do you eat nitrate-free bacon and is regular bacon a no-no? What brand of nitrate-free? Trying to alleviate any stumbling blocks. I'm use to unlimited Atkins mentality....be patient with me.
Again, thanks. :p |
Hi Carol,
Welcome to Schwarzbein! Yes, she discourages regular bacon as it is a damaged fat. Nitrate free meat/bacon is o.k. however, I don't know if you can find it in your regular type grocery store. I buy mine at Whole Foods Market. They specialize in a more natural type of food with lots of organic food. They do have a nitrate free canadian bacon. Perhaps you have a similar type of store in your area. Good luck to you! Maureen (Who has been off pork rinds for over a week!) |
I eat a vegetarian soy "bacon". It's called "smart bacon", and it's made by Lightlife. It's not bad, although it's not bacon. I found a family farm about 30 miles from my house where they raise free-range livestock humanely and don't use hormones. I ordered 1/2 pig from them which I will get in the fall. I can specify my own cuts, and I will ask for it all to be nitrate-free. Maybe you can find a farm in your area like that. I haven't seen nitrate-free bacon at any of the regular grocery stores.

HI CArol
I can't get nitrate free bacon here in Ireland so I have to be honest, I do eat the nitrate stuff. However, I think that the type of bacon we have here in Ireland is leaner than the USA type so it's probably OK. I only eat it about twice a week anyway. A big supermarket chain here make their own sausages and they don't use nitrates so they are fantastic. I asked this supermarket why they don't ofer nitrate free rashers, and they said they never heard of such a thing!!! Clo |
