Squeaky Clean Teeth!

Has anyone else gotten props from their dentist for having the cleanest teeth in town? I haven't changed the way I brush or floss, but my dentist almost threw a party for me because my teeth were so clean! The hygenist called some of her other hygenist friends over to look. I've NEVER had that happen to me, but I have noticed that since I went on Atkins, I wake up without that nasty morning film on my teeth.

Just one more added benefit from Atkins?

I have dentist-phobia, I only go for emergencies. I have noticed much less plaque on my teeth from not eating sugar. I brush my teeth even when they feel clean because my breath will knock a buzzard off a sh!t wagon!!! It's good cause I know it's a sign of ketosis but it gets embarassing to have stank breath all the time.

Actually, my sister, once she became a vegetarian (at 21) started getting cavities. He dentist told her that the high amounts of carbs she that she was eating were sitingt on teeth and become sugar there and start the decay!

Strange, huh?
Peace,

I'm an anti-dentite too, and haven't had a check up in... way too long. :( But my teeth are *definitely* cleaner. I notice a rapid "relapse" when I have a (tr/ch)eat.

NO morning crap

Hey I thought I was tripping! I noticed that too. Thats nice to know there is another GREAT side effect. :) What I also noticed, and I hope this is the right forum, is that I am not hungry anymore. Im afraid to not eat because I dont want my body going into starvation mode. But I really dont feel like eating much anymore, i have to force myself. Its wierd. I even eat half the portions I used too. Any ideas. or does anyone else go through this?thanks

If you eat GOOD (ie nutritious) food that packs a punch, you probably won't need to eat as much. We're so used to stuffing our faces with empty food, that when we get some real stuff in there, we don't know what to do!

If you're eating enough calories for your ht/wt/sex/body type, then you should be in the clear. Also, this will start to ease up when you start adding things like nuts, more veggies, and some (selective) fruit.

But isn't it nice to be able to walk past the fridge without falling into its tractor beam?

I voted that I'm not sure and haven't thought about it before.

I go to the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning thats about it. I used to have alot of cavities due to drinking SODA! But yea, I guess since I quit that I haven't had that much. And I floss, brush, and use listerine and plax regurally so... my teeth are fine...

Only complaint I have is that it sucks even more to floss now because of all the MEAT that gets stuck in my teeth.... eww.

Oh yea, and as for "morning film" the only time I have EVER gotten anything like that was if I don't brush and floss before I go to bed.... I can't stand going to bed without doing that.

Ok...ok...enough of the dentist cracks....I have practiced almost 15 years. I've noticed and my wife has too that we tend to get more tartar when on really high protein diets (200-300 gms/day). I have some bodybuilder patients that also have noticed more tartar build up. This may be due to some chemical changes in the saliva without all the starchy and sugary foods.

Your teeth may be cleaner because you are probably taking better care of your self and that is reflected in your oral hygiene. And, staying away from the sugary Cokes will save you alot of time, pain, and money. Sodas are the #1 cavity causer in my opinion.

Smiles,

Rick ;)

Interesting.

My hygenist was shocked at how little tartar I had on my teeth this time. I can't honestly say that I'm not brushing my teeth better - but I really don't think I am. Hmm.

Either way - my dentist was happy. I think that's a first!

I answered YES, but I haven't been to the dentist for it to be noticed. I have noticed. And in addition, the tartar (I had light ridges in the back) is flaking off.

And because many of us have given up caffeine, it's nice to see whiter teeth, too!

Given up caffeine, maybe ... but decaf coffee with cream and Splenda is keeping my teeth from being their whitest! :(

I brush my teeth more when LCing, so cleaner teeth aren't a coincidence.

First, because when ketosis hits, because of my weight it seems to hit in a BIG way. So I am constantly trying to get that taste/feel out of the stomach-esophagus-mouth tunnel.

Second, because some GREAT advice I saw 9 months ago on this BBS somewhere was that, if you brush your teeth right after you eat, the taste of the toothpaste pretty much kills any interest in the taste of something else you probably shouldn't have. I wasn't sure I believed this, but found it to be true. Toothpaste just did not leave me inspired to go munching. I also think it really helped more when I'd eaten something fairly salty, to reduce my tendency to rebound into wanting something sweet.

Off LC, I brush my teeth in the morning and 'usually' at night. On LC, I brush my teeth morning, night, and about 2-4 times in between. So clearly my oral hygeine is different.

Which is a damn good thing, given my psychologically-inspired refusal to go to the dentist any more. :-)
