In a rare moment of candor, picked up by a New York 1 News camera, Mayor Bloomberg yesterday described the slip-and-fall death of Dr. Robert Atkins last April as "bull----" - and called the diet guru "fat."

While chowing down on bow-tied pasta and chicken at a Brooklyn firehouse yesterday, Hizzoner opined, "Atkins is dead. I don't believe that bull---- that he dropped dead slipping on a sidewalk. Yeah, right."

"I actually went to his house out in Southampton for a Pataki fund-raiser two years ago," Bloomberg added. "The guy was fat — big guy — but heavy. And the food was inedible. I took one appetizer and I had to spit it into my napkin. It was just terrible."

Atkins, the cardiologist who devised a controversial diet that favors steak and eggs over pasta and other carbohydrates, died at age 72 last year after slipping on the sidewalk outside his E. 55th St. office during a snowstorm.

Bloomberg apparently believed the microphones were turned off yesterday when cameras were let into the dining area of Engine 282, Ladder 148 in Borough Park for what was billed as a photo opportunity.

"It was a joke told at an off-the-record photo op," said Bloomberg spokesman Jordan Barowitz. "We congratulate New York 1 for their willingness to dispense with journalistic ethics in order to run a cheap story."

"The event was on the record," countered New York 1 News Political Director Bob Hardt.

The mayor's comments infuriated Atkins disciples. "We are all baffled and dismayed and would like to believe that this is a joke gone bad," said Dr. Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council.

I was on the way to work when the guys on 95.5 were talking about just this..
They were BASHING Bloomberg for not only what he said but also for the fact that he REFUSES to apologize for what he said!!!
One girl said, WHY? WHY NOT APOLOGIZE
and whats his name said.. because he is a tiny little A$$!

It was soo funny!!

Then they brought up the comment that Bloomberg made about the food being inedible and they said.. WHAT, its normal food you MORON!!

They were so for ATKINS...

We should bombard the mayors office with emails PRO-ATKINS.. Make the guy apologize to the late Dr. Atkins!!

The widow of diet guru Dr. Robert Atkins went on national television Friday to demand an apology from Mayor Bloomberg, who called Atkins “fat” when he apparently thought he wasn’t being recorded.
While eating pasta at a photo op at a Brooklyn firehouse earlier this week, the mayor used a common expletive to express doubts about the details of Atkins’ death and said, “I mean, the guy was fat.”

“I was very, very hurt, and I was angry,” Veronica Atkins said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” She said she was “sick and tired of my husband being always maligned and his life’s work being trivialized.”

Atkins, whose controversial diet stresses eating meat, eggs and cheese over pasta, bread and vegetables, died last year at 72 from head injuries sustained from a fall on an icy sidewalk.

Veronica Atkins asserted that her husband died from “severe trauma to his head.”

“His arteries were clear,” she said.

In his remarks at the firehouse, Bloomberg, believing microphones were off, said the food at an Atkins fund-raiser in the Hamptons had been “inedible” and said he had to spit an appetizer into his napkin.

Atkins’ widow said Friday that the caterer for the event was “considered to be one of the best in the Hamptons.”

A mayoral spokesman, Jordan Barowitz, declined to comment on Friday.

The day after his comments were publicized, Bloomberg told reporters that he “would never criticize someone about their waistline.” At the time, Barowitz said that’s as much as an apology as there would be.

Atkins’ widow said the mayor’s remark was not enough, and that she wanted him to say he was sorry.

“You have to tell it to me and the world,” she said.

Good for her! You go, girl!!
