This is gross: Read at your own risk!

I don't know if I'm getting ketosis breath, or if this is low-carb related, or I'm just getting sick or what. I haven't been sick in MONTHS so I don't know what the deal is.

I have this 'funk' feeling in the back of my throat. And if I cough I get this 'nutty' taste in my mouth.

I know it isn't bad oral hygiene of any kind - I'm VERY uptight about brushing and use listerine on a daily basis. So it isn't that.

So what I want to know is, could this somehow be atkins related, or am I sick? I don't really " feel sick " but my throats been "funky" for two or three days now. I'm not drained or tired, etc. And it's not painful, Just weird.

Could be ketosis. Check your stick. At times I get a terrible metallic taste in my mouth related to ketosis. It usually occurs when I am getting ready to dump some lbs.

Doesn't sound like ketosis breath/mouth. That "nutty" feeling would tell me personally that I am sick.

MsJinx Sat, Apr-26-03 11:45

HMMMMM. Nutty = sick? Haven't experienced this. Are you drinking tons of water? That's alway the first thing that comes to my mind if my mouth is ...um..less than fresh. Supplements can give a weird taste, but, again, if you're drinking plenty of water that shouldn't be it.

Any idea exactly how much water and coffee you're drinking? I ask about coffee because it is a powerful diuretic.

I skipped your post several times because of the warning - stinky mouth is certainly not the nastiest thing I've read on these boards! ;)

Do you have allergies or a tendancy towards sinus infections? It could be drainage from your sinuses giving you that funky feeling in the back of your throat along with that strange taste. Just something to consider....

MsJinx Sat, Apr-26-03 11:53

THAT IS SO RIGHT ON! I used to have that problem. Also I think yeast overgrowth will give that nutty odor!! Hmmmm. Maybe you should check out the Candida (yeast) posts on the health board. I betcha someone can help.

How could I resist that topic description?

I think Lisa N. is spot on the numbers. Sinus drainage from allergies makes you feel like you're getting a sore throat but you never do, and produces a taste that can only be described as funky, not at all the same as ketosis. And your pollen count is probably through the roof down there right now.

Roberzo, did you find anything? I am getting that ugly same kinda taste, I have a very sensitive nose, great for cooking, BUT, I dont like the smell of me, I coughed, I dont think I am sick, I almost puked, do you drink reg coffee? I just went back to it few days ago, should I stop the coffee? Allergies could be, I live by alot of farmland, but I never had this smell/taste before. I drink water, boy, do I drink water, love the stuff. Smell in urin too, uuugggg!

Maybe you should visit an allergist

Sinus drainage also makes you cough, a la post nasal drip, especially when you lie down. Unfortunately, allergies frequently lead to upper respiratory infections, which worsen the post nasal drip and give you a really nasty taste in your mouth and a bad smell. One indication that it's allergy related and not conventional bronchitis is that your discharge is clear and colorless, not cloudy and green or yellow. And constantly swallowing phlegm makes you really nauseous. Sorry to be graphic, but that's the reality.

Allergies also commonly develop and worsen as we get older, so not having a reaction the year before doesn't mean you're not allergic now. If you don't want to visit a doctor, you can try an over the counter allergy pill along with an OTC nasal allergy spray. Some people find relief with plain saline nasal spray. It would probably be best, though, to get tested to see what, if anything, you're allergic to, so any medication can target them appropriately. It's a pain in the neck, but it can really improve your quality of life.

I can certainly testify to this one. My DH has eaten apples, peaches, carrots and nuts his whole life, but in the past 2 years has developed serious allergies to all of them (verified through allergy testing). Now if he eats even a little of any of those foods, his throat starts to swell. I now have to keep Benadryl around the house just in case he licks his fingers without thinking after cutting an apple for one of the kids or eats something with nuts in it without realizing it. It's really scary since the reaction can be severe enough to kill him if he doesn't get that Benadryl into him quickly. He's 39.
This year I'm even having a bad time with sinus congestion and itchy eyes (I'm thinking from tree pollen since that's all that's around right now) and I haven't noticed it before. At first I thought it was a cold, but colds don't last for 2 weeks and yesterday my eyes started to itch.
