Too Much Fiber???
is it true that too much fiber will dramasticly slow down the body from absorbing minerals that it needs????? :help:
|
I guess it might if it was so much that it shoved your food right through you. I think you'd have to eat the equivalent of half of a bale of alfalfa for that to happen!
Normal amounts of fiber shouldn't interfere with the ability of your body to absorb the nutrients from your food. It's a curious question, though. May I inquire as to why you asked, and where you heard or read the statement? |
I have read that, too. I believe the explanation that I saw. I have seen fiber ruin health so I am very careful about it nowadays. Something about drawing water to the bowel to handle all that fiber and flushing the vitamins right out.

I suspect it depends on the type of fibre. Eating lots of vegetables should not be a problem, eating lots of wheat bran could be.
There is an inverse relationship between the amount of fibre eaten, and the amount of testosterone in the body. One reason you see body builders eating eggs and meat, and not so many bran muffins,,,, |
I think any thing in excess is probably "bad" for a person. All things in moderation. :-)

i had a serving of warm flaxseed to help get "things moving" and was told that it was too much fiber and might just do harm than good... i thought it was weird but thought i should ask... |

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/DRI//D...rgy/339-421.pdf So it looks like, if you eat something with nutrients and fiber at the exact same time, you might absorb a slightly smaller amount of the nutrients. But it doesn't affect things at other times in the day, there's no upper limit to how much fiber you can have (I'm sure somebody could manage to have too much, but only if they tried really hard and ate nothing else), and a bowl of flaxseed is definitely not going to kill you. Half a cup of ground flaxseed only has 16 grams of fiber, that's not even a day's recommended minimum. |
Calcium, too?
Isn't there something about fiber tying up calcium, so that you may not get as much as you think you're getting? But one bowl of flaxseed isn't going to be a problem, for sure.
I do make a point of not taking fiber supplements at the same time as vitamins, but I figure an hour or two separation is good enough (and has to be good enough, as I'm taking supplements of one form or another five times a day). |
Wow, I had no idea about any of this. I have been taking glucomannan in the mornings right along with my vitamins. Will definitely have to stop doing that. Thanks for the info!
