What is your opinion on Flaxseed Oil?

Being new in here...I am interested in knowing people's advice, opinion and so on about Flaxseed Oil.

If you could take a minute and tell me, I would greatly appreciate it :)

Hi Valerie!

I don't take the oil, but I know a lot of people here do. I do, however, eat ground flax seeds on a regular basis. I love the taste and they help keep me regular along with providing those beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids.

I hate the taste of the oil and the ground seeds. I do take the capsules though. Another way to get the Omega-3's is to eat "enriched" eggs like Egglands Best. That's what I prefer.

I had read a short article that taking flaxseed oil in the pill form doesn't do any good but they didn't say why...I was wondering if anyone had any insite about this claim? They said that taking it in the oil form is the only helpful way......is this true?

I also read that it does help with weight lose....does anyone know how or why?

Thank you both for your posts :)

One of the reasons they discourage the use of capsules is that the oil can easily go rancid if not properly stored or if the capsules are too old. Also I think the approximate equivalent of capsules to oil is 18 capsules to 2 tbsp. Which can get pricey. To test capsules, pierce one and taste the oil. You'll know if it's gone bad!

WOW!!! I had no idea!!!

What does the oil taste like? Is it oil cheaper?

Thank you for all the information...I do appreciate it :spin:

Hi Valerie,

Flax seed oil doesn't taste that great -- most recipes seem to involve ways to disguise it :) I've heard of people mixing it into protein shakes. What I do is add it to my salad dressing: 1 Tb. olive oil, 1 Tb. flax seed oil, 1/2 Tb. vinegar, and lots of black pepper. As long as there's enough flavorful stuff in the salad I can't really taste it. Be sure to refrigerate the oil so it doesn't spoil.

Thank you, Sarah!! I will try it :)

Hi Valerie! I forgot to mention, you might want to start with less flax seed oil and work your way up as you get used to the taste. I think I started with 1/2 part flax seed to 1 part olive oil. Still beats taking 10 capsules a day :)

another good suggestion, Sarah...thank you :)

I have GOT to purchase my own copy of Protein Power. (I borrowed it to start out with.) Atkins agrees with flaxseed, but Protein Power doesn't. Read the explanation, made good sense, took their advice to do fish body oil instead, but seem to have forgotten "why" part. Sorry! But did want to mention it in case you're interested.

Time to hit Barnes & Noble so I can look this up! I purchased their LifePlan video/audio/books, but it doesn't do anywhere near as good with the "why" part of things.

I find the taste of Flax Seed oil quite acceptable to take by the spoonful. If it is fresh it barely tastes at all.

I'd like to thank every one for their responses!!

I did try some flaxseed oil and yes, you are right....it is very mild.

You all are awesome and more than helpful....thank you all soooooooooo much!
