Ditching the Canada Food Guide -- CBC Radio report

Heard on a report on CBC radio today (not verbatim):

It appears that change is in the air for the tired old Canada Food Guide.

Dr. Neil Barnard, president of the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine stated the current Food Guides (both Canada and US) should be put in the rubbish bin. Dr. Barnard says there is no justification for the inclusion of meat and dairy. He advocates a low fat vegan diet.

Dr. Walter Willett, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition,
Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health agrees with Dr. Barnard that the Food Guide isn't worth the paper it's printed on but has an entirely different perspective. Dr. Willett has been involved in the longest term research study on nutrition and says that the results do not support the low fat theory. He says that it is essential to remember there are good fats and bad fats. Dr. Willett says low fat diets may do more harm than good when it comes to weight loss.

My comments:

Dr. Willett's research is not news to LCers. Wonder which POV will prevail, vegan or LC? We'll just wait and see.......

More information about Dr. Willett....

His plan isn't exactly LC but he does talk about the importance of lowering the glycemic load from carbs.

I wouldn't follow his food pyramid but at least it's a step in the right direction...
