Help please! Measuring spinach...

Hi. We had spinach tonight. I bought it frozen and boy was it good...but realized after I ate it that there seems to be a discrepency in the serving size. The package said serving size was 1 cup and there was 6 servings in the package. My dd measured out a 1 cup serving for me, then split the rest between her and dh (the boys didn't want any-next time they'll have to eat some  ) But dh and dd had about the same amount as me and that was a split between 3 people. How can this be when the package says 6-1 cup servings? Did we measure wrong...a cup is a cup....guess this is why weighing is better. So why do they say a cup is a serving instead of an oz guide? I did notice that they're carb count was off...said 2 carbs, 2 fiber, 2 sugar...doesn't add up. What do you consider a serving of spinach? Fitday says a cup is 4.5 carbs so that's fine for me...just wondering what a standard serving is and if we measured wrong.

I know Atkins recomends measuring things like spinach raw. It just seems odd that frozen spinach would have that much of a descrepancy, unless they measured frozen. Typically I can measure out 2 cups frozen, cook it and get 1 cup, then press all the moisture out and end up with 1/2 cup.

So glad you responded, LadyBelle! I figured no one would.

So, if I understand you correctly, you are saying that the measure might be for frozen...so if it's 1 c. frozen, it would be 1/2 c. cooked based on your experience (without the moisture removed)? This must be the case, since we ended up with 3 1 cup servings. I'll have to measure the spinach while it's frozen next time and see if I get 6 cups. Hhhmmm...you would think they'd give a measure for the end product! No one I know eats frozen spinach!

freckles if they're doing it by volume (yuck! at least everything in the UK is done by weight in g, not cups, or oz!) they can know that when you get it out of the packet it has a certain volume. If you microwave it, or boil it, or fry it or whatever, it's likely to reduce in volume by a different amount for each cooking method, and potentially the amount of time used to cook it, therefore they're giving you the measurement in the known state before you've cooked it.

Makes sense if you think about it! :)

Yes...you are right. Wasn't nearly as tough as I thought when I posted the question.
