Hair and Nails... connection?

I know this may sound crazy. But I have been noticing for the last three months (I've been low carbing 6 months now) and I am puzzled by this:
My hair and nails seem to be growing at twice the speed than what they did before.

Examples:
I dye my hair (I admit it) and I notice that my roots show a half inch within a week. Also I have been losing more hair than normal but my hair is no thinner (Its actually thick).
As for my nails, I grow about 1/4 of an inch a week, so I'm trimming often.
I'm healing fast as well.

Are these related? Or am I just being silly? ;)

YES!!!

I have noticed the same thing. I have been LCing since Nov 1 and my hair has grown about 2 maybe 3 inches. Everyone keeps saying.. my gosh... your hair.. I haven't noticed it as much with my nails.. I will pay attention...

Isn't it great?

Great news for me.
Ive only just begun and Im trying to grow my hair and have never been able to have a decent set of nails in my life. They are thin soft and short, despite any 'treatments' ive applied.
I'll look forward to seeing a change! :)

I've also suffered from bad skin since my early teens which was ions ago. Has anyone noticed an improvment with breakouts in that department :q:

Just thought I would poke my head into this thread for all the men, who like me are folliclely challenged.

Ever since I started low carbing I have used my microscope to examine any hair growth. Regretably the results have proved dissapointing. I once thought that there had been an amazing single hair growth, but sadly it turned out to be a stray bean sprout from my stir fry.

Nails on the other hand, sorry I mean both hands, have become more succulent and juicy and I think a good source of calcium.
I can now go for a bite every two weeks rather than the once a month nibble of pre LC.

Only kidding really, I don't bite my nails. I just adore Revlon strawberry crush nail varnish. It matches my high heels. I am called Rustine at the weekends.

Oh you silly, silly man!! :p

yes yes yes!

Hair nails and.....Bloom, skin too :D

I hate long nails but every time I pay attention to my nails (they aren't a big deal to me) they are really long again and need a chop!

But skin is the best ever - I used to be prone to breakouts, especially around TOM - not now :yay:

Thanks Lesley that is FANTASTIC news for me :D

I have just finished a course of antibiotics and was on roaccutane for 10 months someyears ago. It gave me a huge improvment but not 100% by any means.
Its a bit tuff when your getting wrinkles and acne  !!

Silly me

Caught in the act by Bloom. It was a rather a stretch - me in heels - :D

But I am curious, there was a thread just a few weeks back where our fellow travellers on this WOE were reporting hair thinning and loss which they also put down to LCing. Perhaps one will pop into this thread also and give a view.

I suspect that what is happening is a more complex phenomenon.

I can identify with some change in skin. My skin is clearer. I put it down to the extra water I am drinking and the lack of chocolate which is notorious for making people break out in spots.

Who knows whether there is a connection.

I am reminded of the old schooldays prank of saying:

"Did you know that the first sign of madness was hairs on the back of your fingernails"........

and the second sign ........"looking for them!"

Protien

It's got the be the increased consumption of protien that make the hair and nails grow faster. I am one of the lucky ones who still has a full head of hair at 40 and since I have been on atkins its been growing like it did when I was 18.

MyDelaney Thu, Feb-21-02 15:38

me too!

My nails are growing at lightning speed since I started LCing. I attribute it to the fact that I started taking some multivitamin supplements, not the LC, but I could be wrong. I do know that taking vitamins can help hair and nail growth.

Too bad LC'ing wouldn't change my hair permanently to blonde! :p
