Ankles hurt when running

My ankles hurt when I run. I have weak ankles. How can I run without my ankles hurting? I do not have time to go to the gym in the morning becuase of school so I thought I would run first thing in the mornings. I have the motivation to run every morning but my ankles hurt like hell after about 5mins. I am just starting running so I don't know wiether my ankles will get use to it or not.
Should I wrap my ankles?

thanks

Do you stretch before you run?

You might try a knee and ankle rotation to help loosen and strenghten the ankles. It could be you just aren't stretching them out and preparing them for the run.

Bend your knees, place your hands on your knee, place your feet together, and rotate your knees and ankles. Rotate clockwise, then counter clockwise.

You also might want to see a sports doctor to see if there is any physical problem with your ankles.

Then don't run.. but cycle or run in the swimming pool with floatation belts.. I hurt my foot really bad 9 months ago with skipping rope.. and I'm told to refrain from walking, running and esp. rope skipping as much as possible..all non-walking sports were OK.
Ankle strength is also greatly improved by exercises such as deadlifts..

Run anyway. I ran even on a sprained ankle once 3 miles too.

NO WAY... I hate running.. hey I even hate walking..
Skipping rope seemed like fun, until I got that awful foot prob.
No, I can even get on my bike out of my room door... normally I have 3 bikes in my room.. but mostly I take the trouble of WALKING (gasp!) them out of the door and only start cycling when I am out of the building ... but only 1 METER!

OTOH, don't have a car, so I average about 150-160 km /week, not counting 2 spinning sessions (does one spinning session count for 25 km??)

Ankle pain

While you may not be running enough for this to come into play, you should take a look at the shoes you're running in. Different bio-mechanics affect how you run, and where the stress from hitting the pavement goes. Foot Locker will analyze your foot type for free.

I also had very weak ankles, which meant lots of sprains. You can strengthen them by doing some easy exercises.

Try sitting on the counter with a bucket hanging on your toes (with shoes, or it will dig in). You can put stuff in the bucket to increase the weight. Then lift and lower the bucket by flexing your feet at your ankles. Don't use liquid in the bucket, for obvious reasons...

The other is to push your foot against some resistance. Try sitting on the floor with your leg straight in front of you. Holding the ends of a towel, loop the towel around the ball of your foot. Then push against the towel- you determine the resistance by how tightly you hold the towel.

I don't think I explained those very well. Sorry.

Hope it helps! BTW, I've been running for years now- with happy ankles.
