Green Tea

Hi folks,

New to the forums and 1 week into low carbing. I've been avoiding green tea because it has caffeine and the program I'm on (Atkins) says to avoid caffeinated beverages. However, on the Atkins Pro site, they encourage drinking green tea and sell a green tea supplement.
What gives?

Thanks in advance,

Can you maybe get a decaf Green Tea? I've heard over and over Green Tea is super good for you...?

I believe that teas have a compound which is similar to caffeine but it is called 'theobromine'.

Green tea is believed to have some very good effects in weight loss and also cancer prevention. You can do a search for the phrase "Green Tea" by using the Search icon at the top right of this page. I know it has been discussed several times.

Don’t drink it swallow it! (The tablets I mean)
It’s thermogenic, meaning it makes your bodies temperature higher, thus increasing your metabolism and burning more calories each day.

Apart from that it’s a bloody strong anti-oxidant, and is generally very good for you.

I advise taking at least one Green-tea tablet / day! I know I do.

Hey BBJ!

I switched from drinking coffee to green tea. I was on induction, and I lost 14 1bs while drinking only 2 cups of coffee and the rest of the morning green tea. The green tea boosts your metabolism, helps you avoid constipation, has about half the caffeine of coffee, and tastes like crap. The good points outweigh the bad.

If I were you, I would not cut it from my menu unless I wasn't having success!

Good Luck!

Hiya,

*All* tea has caffeine: green, black, orange pekoe, earl grey, english breakfast... the exception is herbal tea, which technically isn't 'tea'.

The difference between green tea and black tea is that for black tea, the leaves are fermented.

Both green and black tea should be available in decaf. Both are also a good source of anti-oxidants.

HTH. :)

Oh: I don't care for the taste of green tea, but I add a bit of Splenda and a few drops of lemon extract (available at the grocery store baking aisle near the vanilla and other extracts). It tastes wonderful!

Thanks all

Thank you all. Love all the responses to my first question on the boards.
I haven't had any green tea during induction, I'll add it back tomorrow and see what happens (I was losing about 1.5lb/day in the first week but now that I hit my second I'm doing about .5lb/day which I'm still very happy with).

Just an FYI
approximate caffeine content of teas (milligrams per cup)
-coffee has approximately twice the amount of caffeine as black tea
-black tea has 25-110mg, semi-green/oolong has 12-55mg, green tea has 8-16mg

Peace,

Hi,
I live in Japan and green tea is what everyone drinks here.
They say that Japanese have a lower rate of cancer and that
it may be because they drink so much green tea.
Anyway, I drank 4 or 5 strong cups of coffee everdy before starting Atkins. I have been drinking 2 to 3 cups of green tea since I started Induction 4 weeks ago and as you can see I have lost 20 pounds. I think the caffeine is about a third of coffee.
Go ahead and try it and monitor your progress but I don't think it will make any difference.
Simon.

I just heard on the news a few days ago that diabetics are not supposed to drink green tea, but I missed why. Does anyone know about this?

You can get decaf Green Tea (and it's not herbal, but is all natural) - my dad drinks it. Here's one link to show you what I mean from Celestial:

Decaffeinated Green Tea
Embrace the benefits of green tea without committing to the caffeine. Our full-bodied brew has everything you seek from a fine quality Green Tea, but you can enjoy its smooth flavor anytime - this one won't keep you up at night. We take out the caffeine and leave in the natural goodness using a compound that occurs naturally in the tea leaves. So wrap up your day with a mellow cup of Green Tea ... serene!

There's oodles out there.

green tea extract

Where can I get green tea extract in pill form?

I buy Green Tea at the Health Food Store. It really isn't a tea but herbs and it has no caffeine. It is good and good for me. It also is warming and filling. Even my husband likes it. I would far rather drink the tea than take pills

so drink up

Just an FYI, if you want to get the metabolism boosting effects of the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG - the active ingredient in the tea) in Green Tea that has been decafinated you would have to drink twice the amount as the non decafinated variety.

Contratry to popular belief, it's the EGCG that boosts metabolism, not the caffiene. The extract, btw, usually contains less than 2mg of caffeine.

marychat, you can pick upt green tea extract at just about any pharmacy. Typical dosage recommendations are for 125-500mg/day – preferably of an extract standardized to at least 60% polyphenols and/or EGCG as a marker compound (this should be equivalent to 4-10 cups of brewed green tea).

Cheers,
Nat
