Mastercook Low Carb - NOT

Well, just received my Mastercook Low Carb Edition.

What a joke, don't waste your money. I can't find anything low carb about it.
Here is a sample recipe:

Toffee:
1 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup Sue Bee Honey
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Low Carb??????

How about this one:

Blueberry Orange Sauce:
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt, optional
1/4 cup orange juice
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1 cup orange sections (about 2 oranges)

Cornstarch, sugar, ?????

Apple Fritters:

6 eggs, separated
1 pint milk
1 pound flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 ounces sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
24 ounces apples, peeled, cored, medium dice
powdered sugar, as needed

A pound of flour, sugar... Holy crap, at least use splenda. You want to know why it is low carb? They make 100 of them, one per serving equals 5 carbs. ROFL

Some of the recipes are sources from www.honey.com. LOL

There is no cookbook for breads, but here is a nice breakfast recipe:

Nut Loaf
1/4 cup warm water (105º to 115ºF)
1 package Fleischmann's® Active Dry Yeast
3/4 cup warm milk (105º to 115ºF)
2 tablespoons butter, softened
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups all-purpose flour (3 to 3 1/2 cups)
2 egg whites
3/4 cup chopped walnuts, toasted

Flour, sugar...

Don't waste you money, this is a pure ripoff. I found one recipe in my travels that used Splenda, but it had cornstarch in it!

GRRRRRr.....

What on earth were they thinking?

Maybe they thought low-carb means low-carbonation?

brobin Sat, May-08-04 11:21

I have figured out their method. They simply took cookie recipes and such and changed the servings until the carbs were low. For example, a cookie recipe that would normally be for about 24 to 30 cookies, is now for 72 cookies. It is still all flour, sugar, etc, but they must be about 5 grams in size.

This is very disappointing, I am writing to them to let them know what I think of their Low Carb ripoff.

Granted, the low carb recipes they have on file aren't worth much but I do find it handy for putting in my own recipes and having the nutritional breakdown right there. It's also good for resizing recipes for larger or smaller numbers of servings. ;)

I have mastercook 6.0 and mastercook 7.0 on my computer right now.

I use mastercook 7.0 just for low carb recipes

I like mastecook 7.0 because I can export my favorite low carb recipes onto my palm pilot and take with me everywhere I go.

I use mastercook 6.0 for everything else.

I will just keep doing it that way seeing how mastercook low carb is not low carb friendly. :-(

I hit the rely to soon

Brobin I have a question for you

According to Pam the moderator at the mastercook help site she said that mastercook low carb took many recipes from mastercook 7.0 to make mastercook low carb

Have you tried comparing the exact same recipes between the lowcarb cookbook and the mastercook 7.0 to see how they compare for nutrition information, etc. ?????

How disappointing to spend that kind of money on something that seems totally useless. I am really sorry that happened to you brobin. Thanks for the warning.

The recipes are the same, if you have Mastercook 7, there is no need to buy this one. I think they claim there are 11 new recipes. Bah, this site will get you that many every week. :)

There latest claim is that even low carb bread uses flour. I guess they just don't get the difference between types of flours and carb reduction.

It really is a shame because the software itself is very handy as others have mentioned. I have been putting in the nutritional information for products we use. (They didn't even add splenda or anything to the ingredient list) Maybe someone should start making a cookbook file from our recipes here. That woud be so cool!

Hmmm, maybe that someone should be me.... :) Hope you guys are patient...

I just bought Master Cook 7 because I found a website that had low carb recipes that were downloadable to Master Cook. I previewed the recipies with the basic viewer they had on the site and they looked good so I decided to spring for the software so that they'll look pretty. Now I just have to find the site again. Damn!

Vixen, when you find the link, please post it. ;)

vixen69 Tue, May-11-04 18:49

Found it! Here you go:

http://www.madsrecipes.com/

It has a section for lc recipes on the left hand side. Looks like they have been pulled from bunch of different sources. Now I just have to figure out how to get it into MC.

Deb...I'm in your neck of the woods. Have you tried the new LC store in Roseville or Folsom?

brobin Tue, May-11-04 19:11

Wow, way to go Vixen. Now, how hard would that have been for Valuesoft to actually get some low carb recipes.

As I stated on their site, this forum is far more useful because of the great, supportive people who post here.

Vixen, I haven't heard about the new LC stores in Roseville and Folsom. Where are they?

vixen69 Fri, May-14-04 20:19

Deb,

I did a drive by the Folsom store and it's on Natoma. I've also seen a TV commercial for the store. I don't remember where the Roseville store is.

I still use Master Cook 5.0. Gues I never saw a reason to upgrade. Anyway, MC 5.0 has a good import assistant. You pretty much cut and paste whatever recipe you want into MC through this assistant. It works pretty well.
