chinese orange chicken

just wondering if anyone knew where i could find a carb count for orange chicken? my husband is curious, and i have no idea! i am guessing a lot!

The orange chicken recipies I have seen have a lot of sugars in them.

Dang. I thought maybe this was a low carb recipe for orange chicken. Oh well.

Almost all Chinese food found in North America is thickened with flour and sugar in one way or another. You're much better just making it at home with LC options than taking a risk eating out.

Dana Carpenters 15 minute LC recipes cookbook has a wonderful orange chicken recipe in it. It's called Chicken Breasts L'Orange. The sauce is so delicious I have used it to make tofu and broccoli as well. The recipe has 4 carbs, trace fiber and 38 grams of protein and is super simple to make. PM me if you would like me to email you the recipe. :) Don't try eating orange chicken out though I read a store package and I had no idea they could make something that was predominately meat have soooooooooooo many carbs!!!!!

thanks for the replies! i know it is loaded, but i was hoping someone would have an estimate on the carb counts. my husband seems to think if he foregoes the rice, he is being good! i suppose for him, he is! elsah, you can't receive pm's for some reason...could you just post the recipe here? thanks

Okay here it is:

1-1/2 lbs bonless, skinless chicken breasts
1/4 cup oil
1/3 cup orange juice
2 TBL splenda
2 tsp cider vinegar
1/4 tsp blackstrap molasses
1 tsp spicy brown mustard
1 tsp minced garlic
salt and pepper

Cut chicken breasts into 4 portions ( I chop mine smaller but that's preference I guess) , and brown them in the oil in a lg, heavy skillet over high heat. While that is happening mix together sauce ingredients *orange juice thru garlic*.

When chicken is light golden on both sides, add the orange juice mixture to the skillet. Simmer the chicken for another 7 to 8 minutes, turning once. Salt and pepper to taste.

4 servings each with 4 carb, trace fiber 38 g protein.

I typically add a little soy and a tsp of szechuan sauce to the sauce bit and will also add sesame seeds, red hot chili flakes and some broccoli to the pan as well (but I like it hot!). I have also substituded tofu for the chicken and that came out great (if you are a tofu lover that is) If you don't have the 15 minute meal cookbook I would highly recommend it. I have both that and the 500 meals and to be honest I have more recipes I use from the 15 minute book.

Thanks for that tip. I have the 500 meals one too, and I wasn't sure I wanted to get the 15 minute one.

Definately go with the Dana Carpenders 15 minute LC recipes over the 500 meals anyday! The recipes are superb!!!! I haven't tried one recipe from it that I haven't loved and you can make it in 15 minutes or less so you just can't beat that! Plus the 15 minute cook time has made for shorter grocery lists. (LOL I am sounding like a freaken advertisement) But really if I had could only keep one of my low carb books.. that would be the one I choose.

FrecklFluf Wed, Mar-10-04 12:28

Do you actually like the recipes better, or just the 15-minute thing? :D I like the 500 cookbook pretty much, with the exception of the baked desserts I've tried.

Actually I love to cook so spending the time in the kitchen isn't a problem for me. It really is the recipes that I prefer but I know for some that the time thing is important. I am an at home mom so I have all the time in the world to spend on cooking. ;)

I wonder if you could use the diet V8Splash instead of orange juice and add orange peel to get the flavor.
The "hot" additions sound good too.

I googled chinese nutrition but didn't come up with the nutrition info site. calorieking.com may have it.

I am not so sure that the tomato juice would give the same syrupy thick glaze as the orange juice. At 4 carbs per serving I personally think it's worth going for the real thing. But who knows... It never hurts to experiment.

Cool. Then I think I will definitely buy that book.

Actually, Diet V8 Splash is a fruit "juice" (more like a fruit drink, really). It's not the same as V8.

It's quite tasty, actually. Flavor-wise, it would probably work. I'm not sure about the consistency, though.
