Will work for doughnut!

Hello everyone,
I made it through my first day, but what I wouldn't give for a glass of milk and a doughnut! or anything sweet for that matter. This pretty much sucks - but I'm going to do it and be successful at it. I think it would be alot easier if the family had to eat this way. My daughter loves to make cookies and things like that and that's the hard part. I think I am going to buy some of that suger free, Fat free Jello for a just in case kind of thing. I did buy those keto sticks to test myself. When the stick is purple is that when you are in the stages of loseing weight? What about the other shades on the side of the box? I thought I'd give myself 2 full days before I tested. This forum is great, it answers alot of questions and pretty much gets me through, I really like to see the before weight, weight now and the goal.....this shows me that this is really working for everyone and that it will work for me as well. Thanks for all the support and Take care.

Dear sinnat,

It gets easier with time. You are detoxing at the moment from all those carbs. The cravings go away.

You can have sugar free jello if you like. Many people thing it's a bad idea though as you won't get rid of your sweet tooth that way!

How about buying your talented daughter some soy flour and artificial sweetener and asking her to try and invent someting for her dear mum! There are plenty of ideas in the receipe section.

Good luck

The Ketostix just have to be in the pink area. You don't want purple (usually means you are dehydrated). The cravings will go away in a couple of days and you will start to feel great! When you are hit with cravings, try making yourself some tuna salad with lots of mayo or some deviled eggs and have at it! I find those two things kill cravings faster than anything!

Good Luck!

Sugar Blues

Sinnat,

When I started on this WOL I had the worst sugar cravings for about two or three weeks. It just would not stop. Be patient with yourself and throw out any kinds of temptations. It was especially hard for me because I have four house mates who are thin and eat sugar all the darn time. Keep it up!!!

Shelly -

Actually, you are incorect about saying that the darker the color you may be dehydrated.

The amount of water you consume has no effect on ketosis. It is all about how many ketones are present in your blood and urine.

You'll wake up one morning soon without the cravings. It may take you a while to realize," wow, I haven't thought about sugary food in hours!"

Actually I am not incorrect. ONE of the reasons the stix COULD be purple is that you are dehydrated. The ketones will be more concentrated in your urine if you are dehydrated, I assure you. That is one of the reasons you need to drink plenty of water eating lowcarb. The presence of ketones in your blood stream makes your kidneys work harder. Drinking lots of water helps flush them out and dilutes them a bit.

Look, my doctor is an Atkins Certified Reproductive Specialist.

I have asked him this as well as having asked my regular family Dr and my endocrinologist. All 3 said the same thing. Dark purple strips are not in any way a sign of dehydration. Some people just emit more ketones than others. Whomever educated you on this is very uninformed.

whatever

What I did while on induction

I put some raspberries in a champagne glass and topped that with real whipped cream for dessert. I thought, however, that raspberries were permitted on induction and the whipped cream I used read 0 grams of carbs ond 0 grams of sugar. Well anyway, it was such a blessing, refreshing and low carb regardless if it is allowed on induction. I also think that it was a better choice than the sugar free jello because artificial sweeteners can stall weight loss.

Sinnat... I hope you're in better control of those cravings! Try to really hang tough...once you get into this way of eating, the best of creams and cakes will be of absolutely no interest to you. Can't possibly imagine such a day??? Stay the course and you'll be surprised.

Also, down the road just a tiny bit, there are wonderful LC desserts that will get you through those times you need a treat.

Good luck,

:D

Sugar!? What's sugar? lol

I was really surprised when I started having sugar cravings! I rarely ate sweets but did drink TONS of regular soda. My problem was chips....
So, when I started craving sweets I couldn't believe it! I tried strawberries with whipped cream because I figured it was better than running after that bananna split I really really wanted! I still think I choose the lesser of two evils but the next day my cravings were worse (not that they would be for everyone.) I threw the whipped cream out with the trash!
They get better everyday!

Keep up the good work!

Lioness....Shelly is, in fact, correct. Dehydrated people will show ketones in their urine and it is one possibility for why the strips may be purple. I don't doubt that your doctor told you what he did or question his credentials in any way, but doctors for the most part don't test urine. The nurses or lab techs do that. It would be better to ask one of the nurses what those test strips show when a patient is dehydrated. ;) While you're correct in stating that the amount of water that you drink doesn't affect ketosis itself, it does affect the concentration of the urine and how concentrated those ketones will be in the urine. The test strips measure the concentration of the ketones in the urine, so if the urine is more concentrated, the color of the sticks will be darker. It will also be darker if the amount of ketones even in diluted urine is great. The ketone sticks are not always an accurate way of telling whether or not you are in ketosis as they measure fat burned. It could be fat burned through digestion or it could be fat burned through burning body fat. Ketone test strips also only measure one type of ketone and the body actually produces several kinds, so you can be burning body fat and not show a postive result on the ketone test strips.
The strips are only one tool and one that many find too inaccurate to rely on to tell if the plan is working as it should. Taking measurements with a tape measure and weighing periodically as well as how your clothes are fitting are much better ways to gauge success with low carb (can you tell I think those test strips are pretty much a waste of money?). :)
