13 weeks training for a 10KM walk April 18th

Join me? I am doing this on my own and thought it would be fun to have some of you come along with me.

This Sunday (January 18th) is my first training session gearing up for a 10K walk. There are 13 weeks of training, each week will consist of 3 days training -of course if you are up to it you can do more!!

For example:

Week 1 - 2x25min + 1x20min

Program is designed to slowly increase your stamina and get you to 10K!

Any takers?

Sure Teresa, I'll join you.
Just tell me what our weekly goals are and we'll see how it goes. You have a weather advantage over me though so go easy on me if I don't make my goals  .
I did the Super Cities walk years ago and I remember how great it felt to achieve my goal of completing the walk. I would like to feel that again.

I may be interested. 6.2 miles is 10k right?

Kelly_L Wed, Jan-14-04 13:09

Hi Marty

Yup, your math is correct-6.2 miles

tlmarshall Wed, Jan-14-04 19:52

Terrific! We'll get there...but I think Mudknife may already be logging 10K daily! Better check the treads on your shoes!! Kelly you better too since winter is headed your way!!

Okay - so here is the plan!

We are going to build up our stamina! Our goal will be to build up our pace and increase to a 10K walk - hopefully within an hour!

The duration of each session does not include the time for your warm-up or cool-down. Allow extra time in your schedule for these essential components of your training.

For each week there is a three walk commitment - as each week progessed so does our walking time per session but you are only committed to three walks per week.

Each Sunday I will post the schedule for the upcoming week.

Suggest we check in whenever during the week? As I get more information during my Sunday training sessions I will post what I have learned.

Sound okay?

Just so you understand what you have gotten yourself into here is the schedule (I'll post early) for the upcoming week - starting January 18th!

Week 1
Session 1 Walk for 25 minutes
Focus on a comfortable pace

Session 2 Walk for 20 minutes
Focus on a relaxed arm swing

Session 3 Walk for 25 minutes
Focus on pointing feet straight ahead

How does that look?? Pretty manageable I think?

and I have no problem with this being part of the 4th TDC Challenge...anything to keep us moving!

mudknife Thu, Jan-15-04 09:50

I'll make the commitment to this challenge and will also be participating in the next TDC one. Currently I'm walking 3.42 in the mornings, 5-6 days a week. I'll make it my goal to be walking 10k in the mornings at least 3 days a week by the end of this challenge.

It's funny you said I better check the treads on my shoes because I just got a new pair of hiking boots.

Great. I'll probably post results Sunday night as I do most of my exercise on the weekends.

I can count this towards my Walk Around The World challenge as well.

Count me in. I need to start exercising and this is a good motivator.

tlmarshall Thu, Jan-15-04 13:18

AntiM suggested that I post this on a couple of other threads as well so maybe we'll have a few more come along with us.

smoothblu - thanks for joining in! smoothblu just where are you?

Geez - good job this isn't a foot race otherwise we would never catch mudknife! Holy 3.42 each morning? Is that miles or kilometres?

smoothblu Thu, Jan-15-04 13:23

Thanks for pointing out to me Teresa that I didn't list my location. I forgot.

tlmarshall Thu, Jan-15-04 15:46

just wanted to know up front if you had the 'weather card' to play if winter kicked in on you. I know its been a bit nasty of late in Washington & Oregon but think that winter should be over for the most part? We survived last week to be rewarded with +13 today and mostly sunny skies past few days! That is my kind of winter!

mudknife Fri, Jan-16-04 06:31

Teresa, that is miles I've been doing. I just upped my distance the other week so will be keeping it steady for some time to get used to it.

Here in Michigan it's reeeaaly cold this morning, but I did get out for my walk. TBO, I had thoughts of quitting but pushed on and completed it. It's a good thing I have a down jacket and a mask hat that covers my face. Once I got going my body warmed up and it wasn't so bad.

tlmarshall Fri, Jan-16-04 12:18

Mudknife - think there is info on walking 10K faster. Maybe I will post those too since you are achieving get distances already?

tlmarshall Fri, Jan-16-04 13:06

sorry - meant GREAT DISTANCES!
