Question about fiber and fat/prot %

Hello to anyone who can help with my question...

I have been FitDay to trak my intake of carbs/fiber/prot etc....and when I look at the totals and I have 20 grams of carbs and 5 grams of fiber, is my net grams to be 15? Next question -is there a percent I should aim for as far as a fat/prot ratio goes - I have been averaging about 70-75 % fat and 20-30% protein, with the remainder being carbs.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

hi Kelly,

On the carbs/ fiber .. yes, you subtract to get 15 grams of net carbs. You might want to increase your vegetable portions to bring that up to your permitted 20 grams. You'll likely get a few more grams of fiber that way too ;) Try to spread carbs throughout the day, rather than saving them all up for one big meal. The body will use only a small amount of glucose at any one time (when you're following a ketogenic diet such as Atkins) .. what isn't used will be stored as FAT because more carbs at one time means more insulin, whether your pancreas pumps it out, or it's injected.

Have you had a chance to read Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: a Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars?? Your library may have a copy you can borrow. His diet is low-carb, and emphasizes tight blood sugar control. He doesn't discuss using a pump, although there is a lot of info on bolusing, and frequent injections, so the advice might be very useful for you. His suggestions may help you to tailor Atkins diet even more.

Your % fat and protein looks perfect  Most of us consume at least 70% of calories from fat. The basic guideline for calories is 10 to 12 x body weight, in your case min. 1800 per day.

Hope this has helped, and hope you can find a copy of Dr. Bernstein's book. :) He has a website, http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/, and there are a few excerpts from the book posted online, so that might be a good place to start. But the real "meat" about insulin and controlling blood sugars is in the book.

Doreen
