can aspartame give you headaches?

I have been on this woe for about 3 weeks and have not had anything containing aspartame the entire time. Today while at a picinic type function I had 1 caffiene free diet coke. Now I have one heck of a headache, borderline migraine. I havn't had anything like this since I started, but I used to get migraines rather frequently in the past when eating all my junky food. Could this thing be a reaction to the diet coke?

It could be. Some people are sensitive to aspartame.

I get awful pounding headaches when I ingest aspartame.

I get small headaches and stomach cramps.

I only drink Diet Rite and Diet RC Cola now.

Thanks, that helps me. Now at least I know I'm not imagining things.

Yea highly likely. My dad was telling me about some side effects of Aspertame. He had a spell where his vision went all jittery after digesting a large quantity of Aspertame. He stays away from it now.
I like Splenda.

Nutrasweet is very dangerous!

Whenever I see someone post a question regarding ASPARTAME (which is Nutrasweet)...I alway feel compelled to reply. It is very dangerous. I suffered for an entire year when it first came out in diet sodas...(way back when)...I suffered with severe migraines and almost comatose like sleeping. I went from doctor to doctor to doctor and finally found out that it was the Nutrasweet. It has been known to cause brain tumors as well as many other things. Once I stopped ingesting anything containing it, I was perfectly fine. I have been so happy since Splenda came out!!!!!!

Aspertame gives me bad headaches as well. It also turns to formaldehyde in the blood stream. At the stores and plant they dump the sodas that have been on the shelf for a year because it turns to formaldehyde in the bottles. If you do a net search on www.google.com you can find out more about this. There have been a lot of people getting formaldehyde poisioning due to drinking and eating a lot of aspertame. A lot of other symptoms go with it as well.

Mmmm Formaldehyde

Thanks LisaAC for letting us know. Just more incentive to stay away from that stuff. It's a shame it's so much cheaper though. I used to love Diet Vanilla Coke. I stopped drinking them for about 3 months. Then recently, I had one and got this horrible headache. No more aspartame for me.

Welcome :) Unfortunately, Splenda isn't too much better, but at least it doesn't cause me headaches. To make Splenda they take sugar and mix in chlorine, if I remember correctly. Chlorine is poisionous to our systems. Makes me wonder if its truely safe. :(

I checked one of the URL's posted. ACCCKKKKKK.......looks like its in our drinking water too. :( http://www.rense.com/general41/beif.htm
"If just 10% of the methanol from six cans of diet soda is retained in the body as toxic products of formaldehyde and formic acid, that is sixty times the EPA limit for allowable formaldehyde from daily drinking water. "

I don't think paranioa is in order... some people are sensitive to certain sweeteners, some aren't. If you're concerned about safety, don't consume it. I just don't think it's fair to tell people it's POISON when there is just anecdotal "evidence" to support it. I'd need to see a lot more evidence from a lot MORE sources before I'd get too wound up.

Thaines Sat, Jul-24-04 16:20

It certainly can..I would avoid all artificial foodss..

horty Sat, Jul-24-04 16:30

Yes. I would stay away from it.
