Weird Cake Ingredients On Fitday

I can't believe the ingredients I just saw in the cake food category of fitday. My friends daughter had her birthday yesterday and I had a small slice of cake... so I wanted to put it into my fitday list.

I found a recipe on fitday that says chocolate cake made with MAYONNAISE or SALAD DRESSING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I know it has a lot of different foods, but please tell me NOBODY eats a chocolate cake made with mayonnaise or salad dressing!!! hahahhahaha I was really tickled by this. Can anyone enlighten me as to why it would read like that??

Thanks :)

uuuhm...

because, believe it or not, there actually are chocolate cake recipes which call for mayonnaise. Mayo is mostly eggs and oil after all. I've seen the recipes in cookbooks but never been tempted to make them. Even weirder are the chocolate cake recipes which call for a can of tomato soup. nasty! :Puke:

My mom used mayo in chocolate cakes a lot of times. It actually kept the cake moist for a longer period of time. Trust me you do not taste mayo when you eat a cake made with it. It tastes like any other cake only softer texture and very moist.

And as amiek pointed out, mayo is mostly eggs and oil which is what most cake recipes call for.

Yep, I've made chocolate cakes with mayo in the past (the very distant past!) but never heard of the tomato soup angle. Eww.

Tomato is a fruit, both sweet and sour at the same time like an apple. So, there is nothing strange about that. ;) Usually it's spice cake that is made from tomato soup, but a chocolate cake is not that far a stretch.

Now what's really strange is making cakes out of vegetables, like carrots or zucchini. ;)

Its amazing the recipes they will come up with nowadays. I too have not baked anything for a LONG time, but I just can't imagine using tomato soup in a choccie cake recipe hahhaha. I have made zucchini cake and carrot cake and used olive oil in it... and they were very moist, but gone are the days of floury things for me... oops .. apart from yesterday!!!! that is the first time I have "cheated" and really I did not feel as if I was missing anything much after I had eaten it. Thank goodness for Low Carb eating, its such a godsend!!

Thanks for the replies ladies, I love reading them.

Actually SlimShady, there's nothing really that barfy about it! After all, people on the outside would probably think we're weird for baking veggies mixed with mayo, or topping chicken with mayo and browning it, or making cheese chips! Everything is relative.

I've always admired those people who truly understand the chemistry behind cooking ... Cheffing is an art and a science!
