What Are Your Thoughts On This?

My Husband & I just finished the first week of induction. I lost 4 pounds, but my husband GAINED a couple of pounds. He had been on a low calorie diet for the 2 weeks prior to starting the Atkins diet. Do you think that could be the reason for the gain?
We have followed the rules to the letter.
The good news is, he is not discouraged. But it sure has me wondering......

Did your husband tend to eat a lot of food the past week? Perhaps more than he was accustomed to? That could have caused a slight gain for the first week. He should see some losses starting the second week though. Just remember, in case, you cannot gorge and overeat on Atkins. Many people believe you can. Even during Induction you should eat only until you are satisfied.

Was he doing exercise? He must. Does he have a great deal of weight to lose or only a minor amount?

Since you said you both followed Induction to the letter, I won't ask any more. haha. Hang in there and he should see some losses coming.

Good Luck!

That's exactly what I think. If you stress your body and deprive it of things like calories and protein for a time, it's going to grab what it needs when it starts getting it again. Going low calorie, even for a couple of weeks, can also lower your metabolism. He may need to give it a couple of weeks of sufficient calories and protein before his body is willing to trust that he won't starve it again and start letting go of the weight.

We both ate enough at meals to be full but not stuffed. While on the low calorie diet he ate mostly vegetables & very little meat. He has a LOT of pounds to lose.
As for the exercise, we're not getting a lot. It has been so cold and snowy we haven't been able to get out much. He also has gout which makes it hard to a lot of walking. (I'm hoping this diet will help the gout as well).
Thanks for the help. I really believe we will succeed on this diet.
There are very few foods we don't like.
Just trying to ignore the comments from the "unbelievers" who say "it's not good for you"..........

Thanks For the Encouragement!

Our first trip to the grocery store was a real eye opener.

Every isle we went down it was
Eventually, we just looked at each other and laughed. Then went to the produce, dairy and meat counters and found plenty.

Amazing the amount of sugars and carbs we have been eating all our lives. What a change!!!!

Does he drink alot of water? Is he using salt? He could be retaining water. :)

GramnGramp Tue, Feb-25-03 21:42

Yes, he drinks at least the required amount and sometimes more.
I hadn't thought about the salt. He does use it. Maybe he should
lay off the salt for the rest of the week and see what happens.

We both have not had any trouble drinking the water, so maybe we should both quit the salt shaker for a while.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It took me a few days to get used to the taste of Morton Lite Salt, but I figure using that is better than regular salt. I was also amazed at all the sugar and other junk that was in everything I was eating before. I'm eating real foods now, and I'm feeling wonderful!

You might also check your salt. Some brands contain sugar (dextrose). Morton is one that has it. If he's using very much salt, he's actually getting a fair amount of sugar, too.

Looks like you have got some good answers here already.

Stick with it and if your husband does have a lot to lose I'm sure you will start to see some fast results. He has two things going for him regarding quick results. He is a man, and he has the weight to lose. I bet once his body does it's initial balancing act he will do great.

That first trip to the market is an eye-opener!!!

Don't worry about the exercise yet!! Dr. Atkins says don't worry about it the first two weeks.
