My Endocrinologist advised me to do Atkins

I am a type 2 diabetic and my endo just told me that the AACE is now recommending that all Type 2 diabetics go on the Atkins diet. He told me this through very clenched teeth.

I was really amazed. He told me that I really need to restrict my veggies and add healthy fats into my diet. This is a major step for our Diet and for Atkins as well.

Has anyone else had this type of support from their specialist?

Mine didn't recommend Atkins per se, but he did recommend low carb without specifying how low (I choose Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution) and he is very impressed with the results that I've gotten so far. His comments at my last checkup? Whatever you're doing, keep it up!".
It's encouraging to hear that groups that understand the role of carbs on insulin and diabetes (like the AACE) are getting on board with low carbing. It never made sense to me as a diabetic once I started actually thinking about my disease along with it's causes to eat more of what my body had a problem processing...carbs! Sounds like the obvious inconsistency of that idea is starting to dawn on them, too. :)

You are lucky to have a Doctor suggest it. I have seen 3 doctors this year and all of them are dead set against Atkins. Even with outstanding test results. Count your blessings for having a Doctor who was willing to suggest it, even through clenched teeth.

Wow- I think I will look for a more supportive doc. Mine is very deadset against any low carb diet. She always wants me to be on Weight Watchers!

That is great news, I can't wait for the rest of the medical establishment to catch up and start recommending LC (even if it is through clenched teeth!).

I have high blood sugar - or rather I HAD high blood sugar, last time I went for my routine check up it was down at a *good* level for the first time in years, the practice nurse asked how I'd got it down so far along with losing weight and I told her I was doing Atkins and she was really pleased, she's a firm believer in LC for type 2's and borderline cases but can't 'officially' recommend it because it's against the guidelines of the practice :(
