Hi everybody,

Phenylpropanolamine, or PPA for short, is a type of antihistamine. It is found in many over-the-counter cold and sinus type remedies. In the U.S., some diet aids also contain it, such as Dexatrim and Acutrim. The diet aids sold in Canada do not have PPA in the formula, however the cold remedies do.

Please check your medicine cabinet, and discard any meds. you may have with this substance in it. The drug can cause a very, very small risk of brain hemorrhage.

I read rumours about this a week ago, but didn't want to post anything in case it was just that - RUMOUR. Apparently, the FDA in the U.S. has known this for some time, but is only acting now. Typical.

Please check the National Post article which I put in the Research/Media forum below. It has a list of the affected medication brands. I posted it under the heading *Dexatrim -Canadian formula. . . ."

I threw out my Contac C. Didn't have PPA in it, but was expired!!

PPA

Me again!!

I have posted a complete list of cold & sinus remedies available in Canada which contain PPA, many thanks to CBC Marketplace. PLEASE check this list carefully - MANY CHILDREN'S FORMULAS CONTAIN THIS BANNED SUBSTANCE - Triaminic, Dimetapp, etc.

You'll find it in the "Dexatrim. . . " thread in the Research/Media forum below.
