A question about whole wheat tortillas

[RIGHT]I have a question about some tortillas my hubby picked up today. The nutritional info lists the carbs at 19g sugars at 1.0g, starch16g,dietary fiber is 20g.
So does this mean that when I subtract the fiber it is at a minus carb? Sounds to good to be true! :yay:

LadyBelle Tue, Dec-30-03 20:59

It is too good to be true. What probably has happene dis the fiber has already been subtracted and it's 20g net. Nothing has negative carbs.

LaTortillas are about the best. The little ones have 3 net carb sand the larger ones 5. Regular whole wheat tortillas are very high carb.

nawchem Tue, Dec-30-03 21:36

add: the protein grams x4
the total carbs x4
total fat x9

this should equal the total calories, if it isn't then they did subtract the fiber

Thank you ,thank you, thank you! I did your formula and it does equal the total calories. Whahoooo! And they are really nice for a wrap. Any Canadians wanting to get these they are called " Paco" and are made by Fancy Pokket Corporation in Moncton, N.B.

Borderlady, please post the entire nutrition label info.
Total calories
carb grams
fiber grams
protein grams
fat grams
I think we are looking at a 19 net carb tortilla here. Way out of range for most low carbers.

Actually looks like it may be a typo and the fiber is supposed to be two grams.

Energy....118Cal
Protein......3.5g
Fat...........3.1
Carbohydrate..19g
Sugars.....1.0g
Starch......16g
Dietary Fibre..20g
Sodium....260mg
Potassium...100mg
I think I will call their toll free number and ask if that might be a typo. You may be right.

doogieb Thu, Jan-01-04 20:46

borderlady - the label is right, the fibre is already subtracted, so each tortilla (or whatever weight this is specified over) is 19g of carbs!

If you look at what nawchem said and do the math:-

19g carb x 4 = 76 cal
3.5g protein x 4 = 14 cal
3.1g fat x 9 = 27.9 cal
total 117.9 cal = 118 cal as stated.

This means that the fibre has already been subtracted - you are looking at 19g of carbs!!!

Look away!

She had said that if the total was equal to the total calories that it was correct. I will call them and try and confirm this though.

19 is the net...thats pretty typcial for a tortilla.....

you could find a lower carb slice of whole wheat bread that that!!!

borderlady Fri, Jan-02-04 17:41

Thanks everyone for your advice. We called and it was a typo. The fiber is actually 2g NOT 20. I guess I won't be eating any of those!

There is another low carb tort called Santa Fe out of Sacramento CA. I remember it said 3 net carbs... I am all out now.. but will buy some over the weekend and will report later as to the true carb amount.

Here in the northwest, we have a brand called Don Pancho that has introduced a lc tortilla, 3 net carbs. I just found them on sale at the grocery store for 2 pkgs. /$4. better than $2.99 a package I have been paying for La Tortilla.

suntanlove Sat, Jan-03-04 16:41

Sorry about that Borderlady/I bought some at Superstore and though i was in Heaven until i checked as you did with this forum/This forum rocks/Where in NB do you live, i live in Riverview.

Samuel Sat, Jan-03-04 17:20

Hello,

The label says that each tortilla contains 1g sugar and 16 grams starch. This means that the net carbs must be 17g or more. So, you need no further investigation! These are obviously not low carb tortillas.

borderlady Thu, Jan-08-04 22:15

Hey suntanlove! Sorry about the late reply. Haven't checked in here for a few days. I live on the border Calais /St Stephen. Lucky that way ....as I can shop at grocery stores in Maine as well as here. Gee we are practically neighbours! about 3 hours away! Hee Hee!
