Does anyone know what has happened to Performax bread? I used to be able to buy it from my local Coles in Melbourne, but they don't seem to supply it anymore. Anyone have any other suggestions?

if anyone knows where in NZ I can buy any of the atkins low carb foods I would have to leave them in my will :O)

Hi Halo_slips,

I still see Performax at my supermarkets. I don't just go to one as a rule, I go to a lot of supermarkets, depending on where I am at that time. I see Performax at all of them.

NZKiwiana, try GNC stores. I don't know if you have them in NZ but our GNC here have them. But be warned, they cost the earth. Small packet of bake mix for $20? No thanks.

Can't say I have heard of that store here in NZ, I can get a loaf of low carb soy bread 2gm carbs per slice for $13.95 11 slices per loaf and 9.00 to post! as they make it up north :(

sheesh cheaper to make it.

I found a bread today in the local supermarket but it has 8 gms carbs per 28gm slice, can I get away with this?
I don't eat many carbs a day lucky to hit 20 gms and I walk 3 times a week so maybe I can go over to 30 grms a day?

Is there a recipe for a real low carb bread to make at home with say... 2 gms of carbs?

bread

I've been buying a low carb bread that is made in Fremantle.
Some Coles carry it here. It has 7 cab and 3 fibre for a net
carb count of 4. It is quite tasty as well.

Just a heads up, Jo P - Australian manufacturers presubtract fibre, so Bodhi's bread (I assume that's the one you mean ;) ) has a net carb count of 7.1.

Cheers.

I don't know about the carb counts, but there are several bread recipes in our Bread and Baked Goods subforum (part of the Kitchen forums). You'll also find bread recipes if you go to the Readers Recipes in Low Carb Recipes on the orange bar at the top of the screen. :)

i've been making this for ages it tastes good and if you get 20 slices out of it, it's 2.5g per slice.

Sam’s Oven Baked Bread

1 1/4 cups high gluten flour
1/2 cup oat bran
1 tablespoon yeast
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoon Splenda (or two tablets crushed)
2 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt

Put yeast and sugar in a bowl, add warm water (the yeast 'eats' the sugar so it isn't counted as carbs). While yeast is proofing, mix dry ingredients together. Then add yeast/water/sugar mixture. Mix wet and dry ingredients lightly, turn onto board and knead gently for a few minutes. Place dough in clean bowl and put in warm, draft free place (I sat mine in front of the heater) for 40 mins. The dough should have risen about twice its original size. Place into greased loaf tin, cover with tea towel then put back in warm place again for another 30-40 minutes. Preheat oven to 180 C. Bake for 30-40 mins (mine took 60 but I have an old, gas oven) Turn onto wire rack. Will slice when warm, but is easier if you allow to cool completely before slicing or put into freezer until half frozen then slice.

Total Carbs: 56g
