A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. 8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident. 2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days. 3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coke into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china. 4. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coke will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield. For Your Info 1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis. 2. To carry coke syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials. 3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years! Now the question is, would you like a glass of water or a soda? |
While interesting and cute, a lot of these types of arguments tend to be largely innapplicable.
For instance, we don't see LC folks arguing against the use of vinegar, even though Wegman's White Distilled Vinegar has a measured pH of 2.55 and can do pretty much all of the above things as well. Also, most citrus fruits have a pH in the neighborhood of 2 and are quite corrosive. |

I know that I won't be putting anything that can dissolve a steak in my body anymore. I figured this post is a more-fun way of saying DRINK MORE WATER. About vinegar ... Do you normally drink it 12 or 20 ounces at a time? |
Hey Dan, I don't think it's inapplicable at all :) The amount of coke that many people drink (not necissarily us low-carbers, as we are a very well informed group :D but the general populace) is astronomical. There IS a reason diet sodas stall many people.
Soda should be a special treat--water is what we need. I just don't understand how some people can't stand the taste of water....I mean, it's water, it doesn't taste like anything! I find it really comical when people say that. But people will chug down a can of chemicals with no problem..... Thank God for LC, my taste buds are normal again! Food with a chemistry set's worth of ingredients taste weird and gross to me now...... |

Until I tasted the water in some parts of the country. For the really lousy places, people know it and drink bottled water. why?
A few years ago I read that people should drink at least 4 ounces of vinegar a day...if they can stomach it. I forgot the reason why and the benefits but I was wondering if anyone knew. What was it suppose to do to lose weight?

At a gym I used to work at, we had a member that SWORE by apple cider vinegar for fat loss. There are a number of other people who do too ... but a simple search on the internet shows just as many people are strongly opposed to it.
I researched it (lightly) and found no science on it, so I dismissed it. Bebe, I don't know how you did it. I tried one "shot" (1.5 ounces) of it and it was the nastiest thing I have ever tasted. Ruth, Udo's oil is foul too ... but not as bad as vinegar. I just add Udo's to my protein shakes. Still can taste it, but not as bad. Besides, cold-pressed flax oil is better for fat loss anyway ... just don't use it long-term. |

I really enjoyed your insights into Coke. I've always been a Pepsi person...well, before LC. But now I barely ever drink soda. I don't like the taste of diet soda, and have sworn off of the sugary stuff. I drink water, water, and then more water. I try to tell my friends to drink more water for their health. But some people are really weird about water. They won't drink it unless it has some flavor. I would rather drink tasteless water than have health problems. Truly! ;) Victoria |
How much I like water is highly variable. There are times when it is just real bland - not objectionable but just not enjoyable. But there are times when it is the sweetest, most refreshing thing in the world and I can't imagine anything that could taste better. I was this way even when I was downing serious amounts of diet pepsi and am even more so now that I drink exclusively water (1 can of DP in ten weeks and no other drinks other than the three EAS protein shakes that I've had recently as part of BFL).

Well, the fact that Coke contains phosphoric acid is not hogwash. And the fact that phosphoric acid will leach calcium from your bones is also not hogwash.
One of the first things doctors tell patients who are at risk for osterporosis is to stop drinking carbonated soft drinks. To each his/her own ... |
