How the ketogenic diet improves healthspan and memory in aging mice

Quote:
The ketogenic diet has its fanatics and detractors among dieters, but either way, the diet has a scientifically documented impact on memory in mice. While uncovering how the high fat, low carbohydrate diet boosts memory in older mice, scientists identified a new molecular signaling pathway that improves synapse function and helps explain the diet's benefit on brain health and aging.

Quote:
Further testing indicated that in synapses, a particular signaling pathway (protein kinase A, which is critical to synapse activity) was activated by the ketogenic diet. In isolated cells, the team then showed that it appears that BHB, the main ketone body produced in a ketogenic diet, is activating this pathway. This leads to the idea, said González-Billault, that ketone bodies (specifically BHB) play a crucial role not only as an energy source, but also as a signaling molecule.

Ketones are the brain's preferred fuel.

I get up and run on my keto brain for 3-4 hours before I eat. I'm sharpest then :)

I read an article years ago in Life Extension Magazine that called Alzheimer's “Type 3 Diabetes”.

They gave plenty of references, but it was long ago, and being low-carb already, I didn't save the article.

IMO, LEF used to be a very good magazine when they were lef.org, but once they changed to lef.com, they got to be more of a supplement pill pusher for profit than an informative publication.

True, Bob, but the Diabetes 3 designation has not only been accepted, low carb physician Dr. Chaffee has a video called "Cancer is Type 5 Diabetes" which I haven't watched yet, but sounds intriguging.

And I don't know what Diabetes 4 might be. Perhaps Chronic Kidney Disease, Dr. Fung's specialty. The crushing effect of internal swelling with high inflammation has the same effect as the high blood pressure in the filtering areas.

You can live to eat, our you can eat to live.

At one time I lived to eat, and I was fat.

Now I eat to live and I'm healthier.

Good health is priceless, without it, all the other riches in the world don't mean a thing.
