fat- vs -fit

DO CARBS MAKE ME FAT?
Defining Carbohydrates in the Diet

this is really intersting

Not unless you are eating more calories than your body uses for the day. Let's say that you've eaten all the calories that your body requires for the day and you decide to eat a bowl of pasta. In this case, yes - the pasta will be applied as fat, stored in your fat cells - those little resoivores of energy that you don't have an immediate need for.

Although carbs are THE topic of the Diet Village these days, our bodies require them for adequate nutrition. Soak your sails in the complex carbs which take longer to digest and keep you feeling full, longer

Interesting aka complete garbage?? I'm sorry perhaps your sarcasm didn't translate well over the net.

We "require" ZERO carbs. We do require some nutrients which may come packaged with carb sources such as vegetables, but we do not require carbs at all.

"Soaking your sails" in carbs might be of some value (although I can't think what that would be - and I sail! ;)) But eating high carb - "complex" or not will result in you craving more soon after as you go on the glucose/insulin roller coaster. Eating protein and fat WILL OTOH really "keep you feeling full longer".

As Malcolm pointed out, the carbohydrate requirement for human beings is a big fat zero.

Also, carbs drive fat storage independently of caloric intake. Some clinical studies (not epidemiological) have actually shown that carbs cause fat storage even while in negative calorie balance. So where does the weight loss comes from if there is weight loss? You guessed it, from muscle!

TBoneMitch Sun, Apr-03-05 21:53

Thats because carbs cause insulin release via an increase in blood sugar, and that insulin activates fatty acid synthase, the primary fat-making hormone of the body.

As these processes are exclusively dependant on blood sugar/carb intake, it may be clearer why carbs can indeed increase fat mass even in an hypocaloric situation.

I'm also a little puzzled as to the purpose of the link, and the intent of the original post...

ceberezin Mon, Apr-04-05 10:06

There are at least two major errors in the original post. Insulin not only causes the body to store fat, it prevents the body from accessing those fat stores for energy. So if you've been filling your sails with carbs, you won't burn fat even though your energy requirements may have exceeded your caloric intake. Secondly, even if you've burned up your dietary intake of carbs and not storing fat, you've still contributed mightily to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia and all their attendant ills.

I don't understand why this link would even be put on a low carb forum as some of it goes against our way of thinking.

I don't have three servings of dairy a day and choose to get my calcium from dark, leafy greens and such. And I would never give up my butter...why would I have to?

And what's with the 3 meals a day? No way!!! With Atkins, I eat when I'm hungry. Simple as that.

Just my .02,
Kryssi

Check out her posts on the war zone and all will become clear. Nyah Levi

Actually, I posted to a thread in there started by her. And looking back, I found that you, Cygirl, were advocating a juice fast. Not good, sweetie and if you've read any LC books, you'd know why.

I hope that you are eating healthy because some of your posts worry me.

Take care,
Kryssi

Some people just like to stir the pot ;)

KryssiMc Mon, Apr-04-05 16:30

Jenn,

It does seem like that but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Cygirl, there is no quick fix.

cygirl Mon, Apr-04-05 19:24
