My weight loss is a "fallacy"!!!

Interesting read about Low-Carbing. :) Click Here!!

I especially "like" (insert sarcasrm) this part:
Quote:
Food industry analyst Phil Lempert, the guru of SupermarketGuru.com,...said thinking that you can go on a low-carb diet and drop 20 or 30 pounds in a month is more fallacy than reality.

Reeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!?!;)

He must have never seen the successes(sp) posted here. And I guess my 25 pound weight loss in the last 17 days is pure "fallacy". What was I thinking???

LOL.

Verrrry interesting! There is so much misinformation about low-carb dieting that many people won't even try it. Of course now that my husband and I are losing weight, friends are asking us about it. They've heard that you'll feel depressed or have less energy if you don't have enough carbohydrates. They're worried our cholesterol will be high and our arteries will harden because were eating meat and cheese and so much fat. It is because we have been told that fat makes you fat and fruit is healthy (just ignore the sugar) I guess people are slow to relearn. :agree:

Dodger Fri, Feb-13-04 11:21

But most people will not lose 20-30 lbs in the first month. If they expected to lose that much and didn't, then they may decide the diet was a failure. I lost 10 lbs in the first month and was very happy with it. I didn't expect to lose 20-30 lbs in that time, so I wasn't disappointed.

niudog Fri, Feb-13-04 11:26

I started this WOE with no pre-convieved notions and with my mind WIDE open. I had NO IDEA what to expect. So there ws no way I could be disappointed with the results I had.

Galadriell Fri, Feb-13-04 11:38

Actually Atkins himself says that you might expect to lose around 10% of your excess weight during induction, then 5%/month. It means that if you have less than 100 lbs to lose, there is a high probability that you will not see 20-30 lbs losses/month.
Of course this is an average. It means as many people lose faster as many MUST lose slower.

I do not like misinformation about Atkins either, but it means that to say that this Atkins is a way see 20-30lbs loss/month is as misleading too.

Every day there are dozen posts from newbies, complaining because "everybody else seems to melt away, but I lost only 5-10 lbs" type posts.

JustForFun CONGRATULATIONS:-)))))

you've lost 25lbs?!? that's amazing! keep up the good work...

and yeah, i can't believe people out there who are so unread about the atkins lifestyle. now that i can make donald's pizza quiche, and there's low carb ice cream -- there's no need to go back to regular junk food eating -- it's just not worth it! why can't they understand?!?! you know??

slim4life Fri, Feb-13-04 13:40

Just to play the devil's advocate.:I think the author's point may be that people go into to the diet thinking they're gonna drop 20-30 pounds the first month. I know I did.....before reading the book. It is a fallacy. People with more weight to lose often lose alot more faster. Any small modifactions tend to help shed the pounds when people are very overweight. That's even on low fat. I remember women would lose 10 pounds the first week of WW....but they had 70+ to lose. I think that it is important to note that low carb is not a quick fix. The way you feel after eating and the enjoyment of good foods without feeling guilty should be the focus of going on a low carb diet....not to mention all the other medical benefits...i.e lower cholesterol, etc. I'm just saying. Sometimes us lowcarbers can be on the defense when things are said contrary to the diet, especially when we are losing alot fast. Believe me, there's some rough roads ahead. It works for me and I'm sticking with it. I'm not overly sensitive if someone says something ignorant like I used to be....because I understand that it's just that: IGNORANCE. If I can educate when possible,I do....otherwise I say nothing. I'm letting these pounds shed talk for me. Just my two cents.

csj Fri, Feb-13-04 15:26

I'm not surprised that people are saying "been there, done that". That's the way American culture is -- one fad after another. Interest in LC probably reached a peak when all the restaurants started offering LC options but sooner or later interest in LC will taper off. There won't be so many LC products available and LC will get less publicity. But many, many people have been successful at losing weight and KEEPING IT OFF. I may lose a few more pounds but even if I don't I feel great and will never go back to eating a high carb diet. There are so many benefits beyond losing weight.

hansjs Fri, Feb-13-04 20:55

I'm not so sure this article is really anti-low-carb. I think it is pointing out the fact that many people go into the WOE uniformed and quickly abondon it when they don't get what they were looking for. Personally, it's taken me 6 weeks to get the 20 lb loss mark, but I researched before I started and understand the process.
I also agree that a many may actually come away with a far better understanding of what is in foods today, particularly things like sugar and flour.

Ooooopsssssss!!

WOW! Sorrry everyone, but I think I may have given the wrong impression with this post.

I was not saying that "everyone" should expect to see reults like mine. It was not my intention to convey that sentiment. On the contrary, I do believe that my results are definately in the minority of Atkins and certainly all dieters, regardless of the plan they follow. Hell, I've done other diets before this one and NEVER have I had results like this.

I was simply making a sarcastic inference in what Mr. Phil Lempert said in relation to my own personal experience. I even said in my post, "insert sarcasm here". :)

I'm sorry some felt that I meant to suggest that everyone should lose as much on Atkins. I realize that for many, it can be a struggle and pounds come off much slower. I have even seen my rate of loss slow down dramatically now as well. In adddition, my wife, who started when I did, has only lost 12 pounds at this point.

I apologize if someone misuderstood and got the wrong impression. :(

JFF:D

P.S. I am however, VERY EXCITED to see those pounds go!!! Thanks for all the congratulatory remarks everyone. I wish all of you as much success as well.

This is an interesting article. Thank you for sharing. I voted in both of the polls...did anyone else? It was interesting that in the survey on 'Are you on a low carb diet?' 300 more people say they're not even interested in going on one than said yes, but the one 'Have you tried Atkins?' over 2000 more voted 'yes and it worked' than 'no and i don't plan to.'
