Lipton Green Tea ... WTH???

One of my new found pleasures since starting LC is yummy teas -- raspberry, peppermint, pomegranate, etc. As time goes on, I even find I'm able to use less sweetener in it than I used to.

I picked up a package of Lipton Green Tea a while back. The Raspberry Passion Fruit kind ("Naturally Flavoured Tea made with real raspberries" :yum: ) It is, indeed very tasty. I was about to use the last bag this morning, and throw out the box, when I happened to notice the very large ingredient panel. (Talk about shutting the stable door ...)

Fifteen ingredients:
#3 Corn maltodextrin
#7 Sugar
#13 modified corn starch
I know the amounts are very small, but still ... I threw the last bag out with the box.

Thanks a lot, Unilever. NOT.

well looks like the only way to get "true" natural flavored raspberry tea??? Is to make you own "syrup" from the raspberries and then add it to your tea...It reminds me of the old saying "If you want something done right...Then you have to do it yourself.."
Damn shame companies can't just be truthful ....How's that for a Advertising campaign??

I have several other teas in my cupboard -- PC peppermint, PC raspberry thriller, Tetley's gingermint, PC pomegranate green tea, Celestial seasonings Sleepytime. Not one of those contains any sugar or starch crap.
What are the product developers at Lipton (Unilever) thinking?

Well it has to be in the R&D department...I know there are 2 big questions that are asked at the beginning of any product launch..
#1.How can we get consumers to consistently repurchase our product?
Answer to that is the sugar...Causes a opiate response in the brain so even a small amount added can cause the customer to buy the product again..

#2. How can we produce this cheaply and with the longest expiration date??
That explains the additives and fillers..

I vote lemon zinger with blueberry! I too love the flavoured teas, but have found that the store brands are usually best. Even some celestial seasonings ones have questionable ingredients.

I have a great garden, I just go out clip a few leaves and boil. No lying commercial element!

Just goes to show ya. Even with something as supposedly simple as tea I won't put the box in my cart until I check the ingredients first. And now I bet you won't either! Good practice for anything that might come in a box. Heck, I even do it with MEAT. At Thanksgivings I had to go to 2 stores and look at over a half dozen brands of turkey before I found one that was just plain turkey, and not injected with all sorts of "stuff".

I have lots of mint in my garden and do that too with the mint leaves. But also if I want something other than mint tea I'm at the mercy of the commercial manufacturers.

That's a bummer. I have also been drinking a lot of tea. I buy cheap loose leaf tea at a local shop. There are also some good sellers online. I would recommend this over some of those sketchy bagged ones.
