Won't kick in

Hi

I am a long time Atkins follower...2 years ago I lost 40 lbs.
6 months ago I quit smoking AND turned 50, and gained 10 lbs back. I have a high resistance to carbs, 20 is about it. BUT I have been on the intro diet for 3 weeks. NO ketosis, no weight loss.
I know this will kick in, but something is interfering. I have been taking St John's wort and one of those herbal dailies for peri-menopause. Does anyone know if this could be the problem?
Thanks for the help, it is becoming very depressing.

Why don't you post what you've been eating, there may be something there that's suspect.

Hi
I am a long time Atkins user so I am pretty sure it is not the food.. but for an example I have 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast, some type of no carb meat for lunch, and a salad with Blue cheese dressing and no carb meat for dinner. For a snack I will have BBQ pork rinds and water or cheese and ring balogna( I use 1 carb per ounce balogna) MY husband is eating with me and has lost 20 lbs, though he eats much more. Strips are not even light pink. I do drink : black coffee and herbal teas. Very little diet soda, mostly water. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week.
I will not give up 'cause I know this will kick in. Thanks for the help!!

Maybe you're not eating enough??? You know what you're doing food / carb wise - that could be it. But glad to see you're gonna hang in there, you know it works.

Water weight?

We men do seem to have it easier. I had to stop eating the pork rinds, they are loaded with sodium and were causing me to retain fluid. The cheese and balogna are also high. I am very sensitive to sodium and can gain up to 5 lbs of fluid in a day if I am not carefull.

Hope you find some help on this forum, they have been a great help to me.

Won't kick in--but hanging in there

Hello All,
I started low carbing Dec 27th 2002. Bought a scale, strips, and Atkins book and started "officially" AtKins 3 weeks ago. No weight loss--full ketosis (actually gained 5 pounds right before.. well you know.) :help:

Quit for four days, and restarted Monday this week. I really like the fact I have no achiness while in Atkins! I pray I have weight loss, and have started slowly at the gym.

I have quite a bit to lose--over 100 lb.

Have been using fitday to record consumption and loss. Intake is running pretty high in fat, but staying under 20 carbs for most part. (how do I post that here?)

Am 41, married, 2 young kids. Have been through chemo for leukemia not quite 2 yrs ago. Wondering if this has anything to do with this resistance? Anyone been there.

I am also 41 years old, married with 2 kids, and I had non- hodgkins lymphoma 14 years ago and was treated with radiation.
Since then I put on alot of weight and could not take it off at all.
This year my hair also started to fall out so I asked my doctor to check the thyroid. She said I was fine (the lab ranges are high - s/b below 2). I went to an endocrinolgist and found out it is indeed my thyroid. Apparently 70% of people with head and neck radiation get hypothyroid. Anyway - I am being treated and feel great. Finally losing weight. The terrible fatigue is gone.

Anyway what I'm saying is get your thyroid checked. It controls the metabolism. And good luck! :D

I quit smoking 4 weeks ago and am having the same problem. I have been on Atkins for awhile now, (took a small break off during the holidays) and went back on 1st of the year. I have not lost a pound in 3 weeks!!

I am wondering if it has something to do with quitting smoking!!! It is very frustrating. I am eating at induction levels, and am eating no atkins products at all. I do eat Flax o Meal cereal in the mornings, other than that, just meat, veggies and H2O.

Could be your body adjusting to both, apparently your metobolism slows once you've quit smoking and if you've been smoking a long time, it's gonna take a while to adjust - just persevere. I commend you for doing both at the same time, I tried quitting smoking but it's didn't happen (I guess I didn't want it enough really) - I'm not a huge smoker, maybe 5 - 10 per day, but have been smoking 25+ years.

Thanks! I really hope that is what it is and it kicks in soon. I do have to say that I have quit before, and it seemed a little easier this time. I really think it has to do with this WOE. You will quit when you are ready. I think one has to be totally ready to quit. For the first couple of weeks I felt like I had lost my best friend. ;) But it does get better. I just wish I could loose 1 pound now. Just one would make me happy. I just keep going up 2 lbs down 2 lbs and back up. I don't get it.

Smoking & Weight

I quit smoking last year, and had a very tough time losing weight...I was convinced my metabolism slowed (although I do not believe there is any scientific proof to back that theory).

In any case, it's important that we forge ahead! If we can quit smoking, surely we can handle the LC WOE!

Keep it up!
Joan

Hi
For those of you who have just stopped smoking, be very careful of what you eat. I was only 10 lbs from my goal weight, and thought I was being very careful not to gain weight. One day I got up and there were 5 extra lbs on me, 2 weeks later 5 more!!
So now I am 20 lbs from my goal. The only thing I am sure of is that if I give up on this diet, I will definately gain back the 30 lbs.
So I am sticking with it. Has to be some way it will kick in again!!

steffie123 Fri, Jan-31-03 15:12

MPQUINN - Thank you so much for the advise!! I am going to stick with it. I feel the same way, I think this would be happening no matter what WOE I was following. Actually if I went off this way of eating, it may just turn into a "run way train" and I would be gaining. I guess I should be thankful I am just stalled. How long did it take you before your body got back on track? I just want an idea of what I have ahead of me. Right now, I am really watching my portions and what I eat. Really trying to just stick to my 3 meals and mainly meats (I cut out the cheese) and veggies. I do have diet jello (cut the cream to avoid un-needed calories) I am also drinking lots and lots of water.

Thanks again, you guys are really making me feel better. At least I know I am not the only one.

Hi Everyone!

yesterday I received the results from my yearly check-up. The results of my blood tests for symptoms that I thought were menopausal ( I just turned 50) told me I have "Late Onset Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia" something I've never heard of but they tell me I was born with it.. It's just being diagnosed because it kicks in later in life.
I think what it boils down to is that my adrenal gland is malfunctioning and producing too much of one of the male hormones. It can be controlled with medication. What I am wondering is.. Can this be my Atkins problem? Is this why my diet won't kick in? If anyone out there can help me with this i would greatly apreciate it.
Thanks!!
