On the verge of a knock down cold - my first in 2 years

I can feel it coming on - sore throat (the back and top of my throat) swollen glands, head hurts. :help:

I haven't had a cold in over 2 years. Low carbing is the healthiest way to live ever, so I can't believe I'm about to be whacked off my feet. :help:

What's everybody's LC *trick* to stave off a cold while it's still in the early stages and hasn't gotten hold yet?? :help:

hey great time to get a cold, it's supposed to snow in the valley tonight

Ok, enough with the cheery news .. .. If your throat is mega sore, some folks have found sucking on crushed ice is helpful, or really cold diet jello. There are sugar-free popsicles around too.

For me, I prefer warm things, so tea of course, and hot chicken or beef bouillon is nice. I'd avoid the powders and liquid concentrates, they are full of sugar, corn syrup solids and modified starch. Here in Ontari-ari-ari-o you can find Knorr brand bouillon cubes ... they're the ones in the little yellow box, with green lettering. Each cube makes 2 cups, and there's no sugar. There's no carb count on the box .... but I bought similar vegetable-based, sugar-free cubes at the health food store, and they were 0.6g carb per cup (½ cube), so that's what I count for these.

Slightly salted warm water is an effective and soothing gargle if your throat gets really sore.

Hope it's just a 24 hr. bug

AHHHH I feel sorry for you LC. My hubby is in the midst of a mind blowing (or nose blowing anyway!!!) :D jerk of a cold right now....It stresses me out, just the sight of him, because I am so scared it will find me next. And it will, I may as well just face it. BUt since I've been low carbing I have found that my resistance over all is much better. I'm a teacher and see little infected people all the time, and usually I'm the one bringing the germs home to spread around. Now it seems that I can avoid the school germs, but once it gets in the house, and I have to sleep with it every night....well, I'm pretty much done for.

Funny thing is that I was like you, no colds or sicknesses for years until I got pregnant a few years ago, and since then...I seemed to catch everything under the sun, until Low Carbing came into my life.

I always try to drink lots of extra fluids, lots of soups and the best thing for me when I have a really bad cold is plenty of hot showers or baths. Somehow the steam freshens up the breathing and the heat relaxes the muscles. I have 3 or 4 a day sometimes. Best of luck. I feel for you.

Thanks Doreen - I didn't know about the Knorr having no sugar. I used to drink the OXO cubes in hot water.... that was at least a decade ago :(

Mari - my muscles thank you.

I've decided since i've been so healthy for so long, that I'm going to wallow in this one. So thanks for the comfort. I thought LC'ing was making me invinceable. Guess I better up the vitamin C too.

My dh is out right now picking up a book at the library for me and buying more tea bags, and a SF jello. He's a great little nurse.

His idea to fix me right up was a hot buttered whiskey. I said I'd take the hot butter without the whiskey. Before Low Carb I would fight a cold with Extra strength NeoCitrin, which I believe is loaded with sugar, Halls Mentoliptis throat losenges, and loads of orange juice - it was a wonder I could get to sleep back then - my blood sugar must have been through the roof. And what with my cold-fogged brain today....I couldn't figure out what to do... well - thanks.
