Spacing of meals and carbs

I am going to shoot for 50-55g carbs a day. I am a type II diabetic taking glucophage and i have normal blood sugars when I follow this level of carbs on the protein power type plan.

I dont have Dr Bernsteins book for diabetic low carbing, but i wondered what interval he recommends for spacing meals. I was going to try to space 10g of carbs in mini meal fashion about every 2-2.5 hours for a total of less than 55g a day.

Hi Gina!

Dr. Bernstein recommends that diabetics don't go over 30 grams of carb per day and the breakdown is 6 grams of carb for breakfast, 12 for lunch and 12 for dinner. Snacks are to be carb-free. Everyone is different, but Dr. Bernstein's goal is to have no more than a 30 point jump in blood sugars following any meal or snack and to maintain as tight control as possible over your blood sugars to prevent complications. The tighter control you have and the more stable you keep your blood sugar at all times (not just fasting and 2 hours after eating), the less likelihood you have of developing complications from diabetes.
I believe he also recommends that meals and snacks be spaced at least 3 1/2 hours apart or you could start getting a cumulative effect on your blood sugars with rise and fall of your blood sugars from the last meal or snack overlapping with the next. HTH
