Which is Right?

I dont use Fitday because I find it frustrating.

I use this http://www.dietclub.com.au/foods/ place usually to calculate my carbs.

Today I decided to see how much nutrients were in my lunch so I keyed it in Fitday...WHOAH! It came up with:
21gr and 9 gr fiber so 12gr

I was shocked, so I went and recalculated it on the Australian site and it comes up with

7.9 and 2.1 fiber = 5.8gr

Which is right?

Here is what my lunch consists of (Fitday/Dietclub)
- 2 scrumbled eggs (3gr/0.4gr)
- 80 gr of smoked salmon
- 1 medium tomato (6gr/3gr)
- 1/2 avocado (11gr/4gr)
- 2 small spring onions (2gr/0.5)
- olive oil and a little cider vinegar

?!?!?! :q: :q: :q: :q:

Cream, I *think* they might both be right! Australian carb counts, I'm pretty sure, pre-remove the fiber, so you don't remove it a second time. Also, there are a few types of avocados, did you choose the same kind for each program? One is higher in carbs than the other (which exactly I am unsure; they aren't something I eat on a daily basis, but there is a fair differece among the two popular brands in North America)

2 scrambled eggs = 1.2g, because there's 0.6g carbs in one egg. I'm assuming the "scrambled eggs" from Fitday includes milk or cream ... I have no idea how they came up with only 0.4g for the Aus. site. If you're just whipping up two eggs and cooking them, you'd be better off counting 2 plain eggs and the butter or whatever fat you're cooking them in.

Otherwise, as Nat said, the fiber has likely been pre-subtracted.

All the fitday counts look about right except for the eggs. If you used "scrambled eggs" as the default, it probably assumed that you used milk in them. Whole eggs only have about 6 grams of carbs.

Hi Nat,

I was not aware that they substract the fibre from the carbohydrate count. Why would they? This is not a low carb site or anything like that. Plus it doesnt say it anywhere there that I have been able to see or in the FAQ.

Anyway, I tried the other avocado type and still the same.

Lets say that the Au site substracts the fibre (which I am not at all sure of) there still are a some differences:

Carb/Fibre

1 medium tomato: (at least 1g difference)
Fitday - 5.71/1.35
Diet - 3/1.5

1 avocado: ( a lot of difference )
Fitday - 12.78/8.65 (black skin)
Diet - 6/1 (I put 200g as they dont have a whole one measure)

Either way even one gram here and another gram there is more than enough miscalculation for me

I am afraid to check a whole day's food on Fitday now. I might just get a heart attack...

Thanks for trying to help :)

If all else fails, use the USDA Database that's in Low-Carb Tools at the top of the page. I think it's the most accurate thing going.

Thanks Karen

I am looking for an equivalent Australian counter, but the one I found doesnt have the fibre count

I will have to figure it out...

Karen Fri, Nov-22-02 21:46

The USDA Database has measurements in grams!

From fitday:
Avocados, raw, California 1 cup, puree
Total Carbohydrate 15.89g 5%
Dietary Fiber 11.27g 45%

Avocados, raw, Florida 1 cup, puree
Total Carbohydrate 20.49g 7%
Dietary Fiber 12.19g 49%

Avocado, raw (NFS) 1 cup, mashed or pureed
Total Carbohydrate 17g 6%
Dietary Fiber 11.5g 46%

As for the Australian site subtracting the fiber, it's something I've read on this forum by Auzzies many times... You might try a search.

Also, with fitday I have found that it matters if you are specific. Instead of 'eggs, scrambled' I would enter it as "2 eggs, raw, whole" "butter, 2tbsp" "onion, mature, raw, 1 oz" - what you and I think of when we say 'scrambled eggs' aren't going to be the same as your 'average' fitday user, following the food pyramid.

As Karen suggested, try the counter on this site. It's very comprehensive (and it's metric!)

Pre-subtracting fiber isn't just a low-carb phenomenon. Governments, food manufacturers and health agencies have been pushing for more accurate food labellinig for years. It's simply more accurate to pre-subtract the fiber content before calculating the energy value (calories) of the food, especially if the food has a significant fiber content ... fiber is not absorbed, therefore does not contribute calories.

Australia, UK and the EU are doing this, and here in North America many food manufacturers are starting the practise as well, although it's not officially a law here yet.

Sorry, I meant that it still doesnt work out the same as the aussie site.

You are right, I should use just egg +butter + little cream instead of scrumbled eggs.

I will try the counter here.

Thank you very much.

Cream's Carb Counts

I found a great program called MasterCook - for each day, I create a new 'recipe', and enter the food as I eat it. The software calculates my daily totals using a 'canned' dictionary.
I didn't include anything you might have used in scrambling your eggs, but here's what MasterCook will tell you. I think the carb counts are straightforward, no allowances for fibre.
