Pregnant, vegetarian, overweight, need to reduce carb substitute with protein

Hello everyone.

I am pregnant and my doctor told me at my OB visit that I need to really watch very carefully as I am at high risk for gestational diabetes due to family history and being overweight (25 lbs). I put on excess weight due to bad lifestyle (sleeping with full stomach) rather than high food intake.

She asked me to start eating eggs and white meat at least for the duration of the pregnancy and try not to gain excessive weight during the pregnancy.

I would like to know what vegetarian protein sources are available which contain very minimal carbs or fat ?

I eat the following already:

- Cottage cheese
- Just began protein powder
- Dairy (yogurt, milk, cheese)
- legumes (sometimes sprouted)

thanks,
mommytobe.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!

Your diet is pretty restrictive, I see. Have you tried any of the MorningStar Farms products? The Breakfast patties, Grillers and Better than Burgers are low in fat and carbs. They have fairly high protein as well. They are my major source of protein.

Diet is not restrictive, need to find good protein sources

Actually my prescribed diet is not restrictive (5-6 servings of carbs), fruits, dairy etc . The only problem is that my protein sources come from dairy, legumes etc which also contain carbs. I need to find sources (other than meat, fish, eggs etc) which are maximum protein and minimal carbs.

I used to eat only white meat before but gave up as I started to get nauseated when I would smell meat. So the soy protein burgers and other things I am thinking will not be something I could have as I have never eaten red meat due to disliking the smell and texture.

Tofu can be pretty low in carbs, depending on the brand.

So Soya is a product you might want to try - it's soy based "chicken" type slices, but they smell and taste very plain. Shouldn't make you ill. :) They're sold dry, and you cook them in broth or water and usually add sauce to them.

HTH. :)

Found a great site for Low Carb Vegetarian Protein Sources

http://www.immuneweb.org/lowcarb/food/protein.html

I am going to try to find these QUORN products also along with eating TOFU/SOYA products. Especially in the first product they have listed, it has 0 carbs and unlimited protein.

Does anyone know how much protein there is in mushrooms?
