Surviving the Holiday Season Challenge!

Hello everyone! Every single year between the end of October through New Years, I struggle to not gain weight. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years- so many holidays right in a row- ALL with one common thing.... delicious and tempting FOOD!

This year I don't want to give in. I know I can enjoy myself without cheating. I don't want to gain ten pounds that I will have to work extra hard to get off after the holiday season.

I found an interesting article about holiday weight gain: http://www.nichd.nih.gov/new/releas...yweightgain.cfm

This challenge is for people that want to stay cheat free (or at least not cheat a lot) and continue their weight loss through out the holiday season. We will prepare for the holidays by setting goals for ourselves, offer daily support and advice, and have weekly weigh in's starting the week before our first big holiday- Halloween!

Anyone up to the challenge? :)

My goals:

Not cheat during Halloween at all (no candy. I will treat myself to LC popsicles and jello instead)

Thanksgiving: No mashed potatoes or stuffing. I will endulge myself in cheesecake made with Splenda, however. And of course, lots of LC ice cream.

Christmas: I shall stay low carb- may have dessert, but I will make sure it is made with Splenda. LC ice cream. Yum.

New Years: Might have some alchohol, but plan to stay LC besides that. I will bring lc chips to the parties so I won't feel left out.

These are my undetailed goals. As each holiday nears, I will elaborate on them some more.

Count me In. The holidays are a tough time to be low carbing. I am determined this year to not only not gain any wieght, but to continue losing. The specifics are:

I want to remain cheat free for Halloween (Candy is a weakness of mine).

Thanksgiving Day will be a free day, I will have what I would like that day and then go right back to strict induction and not allow it to turn into a weeklong carb binge.

The same with Christmas and New Years. For me, I think by doing a contolled cheat I will be able to be more successful, so i won't have to obsess about what I can't have and feel like I'm am missing out.

sign me up!!

canadian thanksgiving is next weekend, and i've been trying to figure out how i'm going to handle it. we're going to my mom's and she's just started atkins (yay mom!!!), so at least i wont be alone in my lowcarbness. :)

Of course, I'm with you! I have an added day though.. My birthday is Nov 15. But it's my 21st... so I'm going a little overboard, I expect.

My goals:

No cheating on Halloween!

I'm allowed to go nuts on my birthday. But ONLY on my birthday. Straight back on plan the day after.

No cheating on Thanksgiving! There's enough veggies and turkey that I should be able to survive it.

No cheating on Christmas! Research and make low-carb recipes that taste even better than the traditional stuff!

No cheating on New Years! Of course!

Hello everyone! Glad to hear I won't be alone in this challenge!

I have a couple un-announced celebrations- two Halloween parties to attend. The next two Saturdays. I may allow myself to drink, but NO PIZZA, chips, or candy. I always eat carbs when I drink. I need to train myself not too.

Akasha Fri, Oct-08-04 10:37

My first party is tomarrow. I am debating if I should drink or not. For me, even drinking alchohol counts as cheating. I still am undecided.

missaec Fri, Oct-08-04 13:24

If, to you, it counts as cheating, don't do it. You'll just feel bad about it in the end.

Akasha Tue, Oct-12-04 20:29

Okay, so I ended up drinking Raspberry Vodka (no carbs) and munching on LC chips. I didn't gain anything, and drank responsivily so that I barely felt it the next morning. It was great, and I plan to do it for the other party I am going to next weekend.

Then no more drinking for a while. I might have just been lucky to not gain anything that time. Hehe.

Only a couple weeks until Halloween! Must. Not. Buy. Candy!

Hey, everyone!

I'm not sure I'm up to this, but I know I'll need some support to get through the holidays w/o cheating, so here I am.

As a first acomplishment I'd like to say that I did get through a week at my folks' for my B-Day w/o giving in to the Carb devil! I did binge on sugar-free candy and LC chocolate cheese cake wich are incredible vices for me, but no real carb binging.

What I really need to give up is sugar alcohols, they are totally doing in my hopes for loss.

drinking

Hey Akasha,
I just discovered a great drink that you can totally make low carb and it is the best drink I've ever had so I thought I'd share it here.

LC raspbery mojito:

1tbsp crushed mint
1/4 c Bacardi Raz (or any kind of rum)
40z club soda
1/4 lime squeezed into drink
2 tsp sweetener

I know you can't really have this unless you're the hostess cause you need sweetener, but these are sooooooooooo good!

I've found I usually loose weight after a night of drinking, but I think it's just from being dehydrated.

Moderation is the key.

Mmm, that sounds so good! If I can get ahold of the ingrediants, I will be sure to try it.

How is everyone doing? Halloween is just around the corner. Lost of candy to say no to. ;)

walnut Thu, Oct-14-04 14:41

i made it thru thanksgiving pretty much unscathed. i had a wee bit of punkin pie and a piece of my hubby's b-day cake, BUT i lost weight over the weekend, anyways! i made sure that i was eating lowcarb the rest of the time.

anyone have preventative tactics to use at hallowe'en?

Akasha Fri, Oct-15-04 12:12

Congrats, Walnut! My Thanksgiving is still yet to come. Hehe.

I've been doing okay. Did pilates two times this week already, but I have also been snacking late at night, which is a no no for me. I need to cut it out.
