Why not drink diet sodas??
Here's a good article explaining why diet sodas are just not good for you!

Great post!
Great explanation about discouraging the use of both caffeine and aspartame. For me, it was when I started to incorporate a lot of Diet Coke into my life (a few years ago) that I put on a good 25 pounds. In fact, I blame that beverage for triggering headaches, including frequent migraines, as well as causing voracious hunger which would result in college-style eating: ramen, bagels, chicken nuggets, pints of ice cream.
Anyway, one of the most positive changes I made when deciding to eat LC was to give up diet drinks. Although I admit to drinking them once in a while, it is definitely not the nasty habit it used to be. Thanks for the great article! :) |
I love Diet Coke and drink it in moderation. I almost never have it at home but will order it on occassion when I'm out to eat. It seems to have the opposite effect on me and kills hunger or sweet cravings. I think it's the people who drink numerous diet sodas a day that start to have problems with it. Like anything else, it should be enjoyed in moderation and not as a main source of liquids in a day. I drink mostly water and always an extra glass when I have a diet soda.

Wow! That was fascinating, and it makes sense. Luckily I only drink a diet soda once a day, with dinner and it doesn't seem to cause problems for me. But it makes me wonder now about putting Splenda in my decaf coffee every morning! Thanks, great article! |
Great article, Teri. Thanks

Thanks for the article Teri.
Much enlightening. It is true that I have people around me (colleagues mostly) who drink Diet Coke like it is water and.... cannot function without....I could never quite understand... and do NOT make the mistake of saying PEPSI if it is COKE or the other way round!!!! Ciao  |
Yikes! Makes me glad I've never developed a taste for diet pop! There is a lot of eye-opening nutritional information on this forum - I've spent more time in the past month researching food issues than I have in the previous five years. Thanks for the heads up. ;)

Aspartame, always gave me a headache/ stomach ache, years ago, I can remember when doing some research when I first got pregnant, and at that time, there was several european countries that had already banned it, as well health Canada, suggested pregnant women not use aspartame, as it turned into methane gas, in the stomache of Pg/ wm. And that was 20 years ago!! Yet W.W. still push it from what I understand.
I can have the odd can, without the headache, now but, only when I really don't have an alternative. Cheers Kathy |
and splenda?
Doesn't Diet Rite now have Splenda? I'm not so sure what to think of Splenda, mind you...but is another option. There's still that "cephalic phase response" though.
I've never had any problems with aspertame persay, but I have noticed a subtle urge to eat something else on occasion (after drinking diet pop). P.S. Yes, I said POP, and yes, I hail from the midwest originally. ;) |
Thanks for posting. I have been trying to get myself off of diet soda, but I am horribly addicted. This article made me realize how much I really should give it up.

diet pop/ i'm sooooo addicted
I too am liker Kerbear,
I have been addicted to diet pop for years. In fact, I cannot even tell the difference between the diet pop and real pop. This kinda scares me. Also, I get really hungry after a diet soda. The above article also backs up what the CAD diet book says. The CAD book says that artificial sweeteners are worse than the real ones and that they trigger insulin rushes. If you do not learn to control your insulin release, weight loss will not happen. High insulin levels and frequent release of insulin keeps our bodies from burning fat. Instead, our bodies spend the day on a insulin roller coaster that burns sugar. Given the fact that I know this and have two articles to back up the fact that diet pop is bad, it is time to give it up. I am going to try to go cold turkey. Does any one know what I can drink instead of water. My mind tells me to drink something else at least once a day. Is all artificial sugar bad? What should I drink with dinner; a regular pop, chocolate soy milk, or diet pop? Is alcohol OK sometimes still? I like Zima. :q: :q:  |
The question of what to drink instead of soda is pretty easy for most southerners. The answer is ICED TEA! But, contrary to most, I drink mine unsweetened.

and if that wasn't enough
Dark colas, diet or not contain a substance called phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid leaches calcium from your bones. So, drinking a lot of dark sodas can lead to or exacerbate osteoporosis. Not a problem women want to add to.

its me again
Hi,
The reason for my name, cheater, is that I have to find my way out of this sticky mess even if it means cheating. Diet pop is probably the only thing... uh well, and chocolate, that I crave. I think I could give it up for a day. Would it hurt to have tea with splenda or a coffee with sacharrin once a day? Please help me keep cheating  ;) |
I drink coffee with Splenda every day. Many people here drink tea, too. I don't think once a day will cause much of a problem. Especially if you are having to choose between that and a soda.
