Atkins says that the Atkins Diet is not for anyone with severe loss of kidney function. Does anyone know what a Type II with 50% loss of kidney function is supposed to do? Is his comment directed toward the problem of high protein levels and processing by the kidneys?
Restricting the carb intake has stabilized the blood sugar, but am I accelerating my kidney damage??

I find that on Atkins, I don't eat all that much protein anyways. My Fitday I did last was about 25% protein, sometimes more, but usually it's 70% fat, 20-30% protein, and 5-10% non-fiber carbs.

Now to answer your question, I have no idea what to tell you to do. I had protein levels of +2 a few months ago, but have 0 now. I do understand that high blood pressure and blood sugar is what gets the kidney's more than anything.

Someone else have more of an idea?

Thanks for the input. I'm hoping that my protein intake is low enough that the question is moot, but I guess I should further adjust my meals to lower levels. I just don't think I can become a vegetarian!

I don't eat that much protein either, as Dr B says to cut back on protein while trying to achieve weight loss.

I am by no means a vegetarian! (I do eat 1/2 an avocado per day in a small salad.)

I sometimes think of Dr. Bernstein's yet to be released new book, thinking 'I hope he includes this, and I hope he includes that'.

I hope he includes either reassurance or instructions for people with kidney damage.

Hi there JG,

I think you really need to discuss this with your doctor. If you have a significant degree of kidney failure, this way of eating may exacerbate your problem.

Check with your doctor how much protein he/she thinks is safe for you to consume.

thx. I have an appointment with a kidney specialist tomorrow, but unfortunately, he still believes in a low fat diet. Oh, the joys of HMOs!

Well, I'm back with the latest kidney/protein info, as requested. With my 40%+ loss of kidney function, my doctor is recommending .6 g/kg/day. Apparently normal is .8g/kg/day. For those of you who prefer lbs, this is your weight in pounds divided by 2.2 times either .6 or .8.
For me, this equates to about 10 oz of chicken breast or one pkg of starkist tuna per day--or one of the Atkins meat recipes. Ouch!
For more info, try http://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com for an article "How much protein do you need?" According to them, 2g/kg is the stress point for healthy kidneys.
With my improved blood pressure, bg and fluid retention without any medication, we have another doctor convert. What was funny is that he closed the door to admit it, since there had been a major argument among the associates just yestday!!!
We shall overcome yet.

An easier way to figure this out in pounds might be

pounds x .45 x .6 (reduced protien plan)
pounds x .45 x .8 (recommended normal by some plans)

So for me - it would be

214.5 pounds x .45 = 96.5 kg x .8 (for normal protien plan) = 77.2 grams protein/day.

Just as a matter of interest, The Protien Power Lifeplan, by the Drs. Eades recommends significantly more than that. In my case, they suggest I eat 120 grams/day.
