I want to help...but I dont want the cookies!

I am going to give blood on friday the 9th. I know when you are done they want you to eat cookies and drink Orange Juice.

So here is my question. I have just started induction over again with the hopes of going back in to ketosis by monday or tuesday, I don't want to drink the OJ and really don't want the cookies. I know I am a carb addict and will just pig out the rest of the day. Is there a better alternative I can bring with me? Cheese and maybe a diet coke in place of the OJ? Or even better can I just drink lots of water?

Has anyone else gone through this?

Have you given blood before? Some people don't even feel it.
If you do need a little something, I think cheese or anything high in protein will work for you. It's all about getting our blood sugar stable, and we know more now than we did before low carbing!

You can actually call them for alternatives.

I would ask a doctor as well to make sure you are not putting yourself at risk.

Definitely make sure you're well hydrated, so drink plenty of water before, during and after. Avoid caffeine or diet sodas, since those can be dehydrating. The suggestion for protein snacks is good  Here's the advice from the FAQ's at atkins.com:

What can I drink and eat after giving blood instead of the usual OJ and cookies?

After donating blood, your fluid volume is reduced, which also decreases the volume of blood sugar available and can make you lightheaded or dizzy. You will be offered something to drink to replace the fluid and raise your blood sugar level. Instead of sugary fruit drinks, consume water or other non-carbohydrate beverages; instead of a cookie, have a piece of cheese or a slice of turkey. If you are beyond Induction, you can have a piece of fruit with nuts. It.s a good idea to plan ahead and bring with you some of your allowable foods and beverages.

Try to have smaller more frequent protein-containing meals and snacks for the week following the donation, to provide the building blocks for new blood cells.

Good luck to you :rose:

I gave blood a couple of months ago. I brought some cheese and nuts with me, and ate that afterwards along with drinking a large bottle of water. I was fine -- I donated in the middle of the day and went right back to work afterwards.
