High cholesterol level
Hello all,
after 7 weeks Atkins - I have lost about 14kgs and feel pretty good. I have Just come back from the Drs after my blood test. It seems my combined cholesterol is 330! The Dr. says that no matter what the proportions of cholesterol are, a result of 330 requires medication to reverse. Has anybody any experience of this. I'm disappointed because I thought everything was going so well....is it all the eggs for breakfast? Thanks Victor |
Have you considered staying on Atkins but cutting out red meat and eggs? Some people can't handle those foods.
Best of luck to you!! :) KK |

Did you have your cholesterol checked before you began LCing? It might be that 330 is down from what it was before - having a baseline to compare is usually recommended. It could also be another phenonmenon called the beta shift. The Eades cover this as well on their FAQ page: Quote:
The most important thing to keep in mind is that elevated cholesterol alone is not a good indicator of CVD. There are numerous posts in the Health forum on this topic that will help shed more light on this. HTH -Nat |
Hallo from Frankfurt!
Don't worry - this will get back to normal. Try the advice NAtrushka gave you and do the test again soon. My levels have gone down, but I don't eat eggs every day... Good luck! Alina |
Atkins mentions this in DANDR...you've dropped 30+ pounds in a fairly short time frame. You should see a substantial drop in LDL and Total Cholesterol readings by the time you have been on the Atkins program for 6 months.
I was tested in my 6th week...Triglycerides down 30%, but LDL up from 220 to 280+...HDL virtually unchanged. I'm scheduled for another set of tests next week (week 14), but I haven't hit a "plateau" yet, so I'm guessing that my LDL will still be elevated (I'm hoping for another dip in my Triglycerides, though). I'm not going to get too excited about my LDL/Total Cholesterol figures until I've gone a full 6 months, and I'm certainly not planning to restrict fats or eggs at all. There is plenty of evidence to indicate that reducing red meat and eggs has little effect on cholesterol, and that Triglycerides are a far more important indicator of cardiac/circulatory risk. |
