Liquor?

Has anbody not stopped drinking and still lost weight? It makes me crazy to hang out with my friends to kick back and watch a movie and not have some drinks with them. Any info?

First two weeks

I abstained completely for the first two weeks, and now I have sugar free gin & tonics on the weekends. I'm still losing, but the alcohol usually kicks me out of ketosis for a day or two, so it's probably slowing me down.

i hear that vodka and everclear are low in carbs, if you absolutely have to, add some to some drink that is allwed like diet right or crystal light in the bottle (not the powder) but you should still only drink in moderation. maybe only once a week if you absolutely have to. but you already know its not recomended. if you notice you stop losing wieght while drinking, just stop drinking.

I am glad someone brought this up. I drank a 6 pack of that new low carb beer and gained 4 pounds. Is this normal? I honestly don't think I will be doing that again if it is.

.....just stop drinking.

Hahahahahaha. Only if life were that easy, I would weigh 165 pounds.

A different perspective

I have watched some of these posts about drinking, or not, and I hope collectively you can find a balance, and I suspect some of you may discover that you have more of a problem with alcohol than you recognized.

In general, I think the clear hard liquors are carb-free. In general, I think anyone who drinks Everclear outside of a Fraternity house has a problem with alcohol. Just one woman's opinion.

I am not alone on these boards having discovered that life is simply infinitely easier now that I don't drink at all. The skills I have learned in building a life without liquor transfer easily to living LC, as well. For me, LC/Atkins is a breeze compared to trying to "control" my eating in a low-fat, low-cal plan. Similarly, and I can only speak for myself, Not drinking at all is easier than controlled drinking.

Take what you want and leave the rest.

Alcohol

This is my 2nd time around low carbing, and I'm hoping to make it a lifelong way of eating. I enjoy a martini or two in the evening nearly every night. I'm losing very slowly, but I'm losing, and I'm in ketosis, too. I stick to no-carb alcohols (see Atkins for the list), and I recognize that my body burns the alcohol before burning fat. But since this is a lifelong change, I want to do it in a way that I can do for years, and cutting out alcohol is something I'm not willing to do.

You'll find that you can't drink as much on a LC WOE (one or two drinks is PLENTY for me now, when I could have more when eating lots of carbs). Many of us here do enjoy adult beverages in moderation, even though there are some who frown on it. Don't let anyone guilt you into not drinking... if you want to drink, go ahead. You're an adult, and can do what you want.

Kmarie, I am curious about your statement:
*You'll find that you can't drink as much on a LC WOE*
can you explain that? Is it because you feel the effects more or is it because it is against the WOE?
Thanks ..will be waiting to hear from you..( having my nitely glass of Chabis)

Thank God!

I just want to say THANK YOU to kmarie1351 for being so open minded about peoples ways of life and this LC thing. YOU KICK ALL ASS!!! I have had so many people on this site whine (I could've used the B word.) and moan about how drinking is sooo bad and it's self destroying etc etc etc. Thank God there is a normal human being who I can relate to on this site, along with everyone else who has posted on this topic so far. THANK YOU for being only mortal and indulging every now and then! You guys rock!!! And I will think of you guys as my "drinking buddies". *wink wink* ;)

P.S. As to candyluver's question...when in ketosis you burn up stuff faster...including alcohol. Which means getting drunker (Is that a word) faster. Aka: Making you a light weight! ( Can you say more economical drinking...or just a really cheap date!) LOL! :D

Ok...it's 10:31pm EST. Just got the baby to bed. I'm going to go join my fiance in slumber. Good Night!

candyluver Thu, Jun-05-03 20:42

But..if you're NOT in ketosis..just low carbing..isn't the only thing that slows you down when drinking low carb alcohol is the calories?

Joe Joe Thu, Jun-05-03 22:19

I enjoy the occassional drink as well. Mine is Whiskey and Diet Coke. no carbs, but the alcohol gets burned off first, which slows fat burning yadda yadda. I'm only human. I like to stick to this WOE, but if you plan to do it for a lifetime, I don't think you can deny yourself the little guilty pleasures. Eating a piece of chocolate cake once in a blue moon won't kill you either.

I say enjoy your drinking (responsibly of course)! If I drink a lot on a weekend, I'll do a few days of induction eating to make sure I stay in ketosis. I find it's not a big deal. Different strokes for different folks. :D
