Is loose, saggy skin inevitable?

Hi all,

I've been worried what's going to happen to all my skin once I'm slim.

I read some of the old posts on this topic. I do understand it depends on the elasticity of your skin, how fast you lose, how much you exercise, etc. And I read some of the great suggestions to combat this problem.

But I'm wondering - does it affect almost everyone? If you lose significant weight, is it inevitable you're going to have saggy skin?

I guess I'm hoping to hear some good news from folks who've lost quite a bit - I need to lose 50+ lbs -- and whose skin is returning to normal or close to.

I don't expect perfection but I wonder how bad it's going to be.

Good news, anyone?

Hi there,

My brother-in-law has lost quite a bit of weight over the last several years--about 75 lbs to be precise.

From what I've noticed, his skin appears to have reduced itself with his weight loss and appears quite normal. I realize everyone is different, but I think, at the very least, you can harbor some cautious optimism in this regard.

Good luck!

I've lost about 55lbs. since November and my skin seems to be keeping up alright. Don't get me wrong, I still have stretch marks on my stomach, but I don't have any loose skin yet(knock on wood).

I'll let you all know in about 20lbs. if my skin is still holding up.

I don't think it's necessarily inevitable, but a lot depends on the factors that you already listed.
Starting out with 120 pounds to lose and being over 40, I stand a good chance of winding up with extra skin, but I'm doing what I can to help minimize it (exercise, losing slowly, drinking plenty of water, etc...) and I'll worry about it when I get to goal, which at the rate I'm going will be at least another year.

L-Lysine is supposed to help with skin elasticity, I have a stack of weight to lose and am afraid of this as well but I am thinking of starting to do skin brushing (I have to do some more reading about it) and drinking a lot of water, losing weight at a sensible rate and taking my L-Lysine .... fingers crossed

Yes

It will happen eventually. But if you are young enough you may be years away from it. If you are not, then prepare to hang a little after you lose. a small price to pay.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone.

I don't mind sagging a little. And I've already got stretch marks from when I got fat in the first place so I know I won't lose those.

I'm just hoping my stomach skin isn't hanging around my thighs  !

I have some hope now hearing that things are going back to sort of normal for some of you. I'll settle for sort of normal!

I also have a couple of stretch marks. Someone suggested I go get Mother's Helper- a cream that helps postpartum women get rid of or reduce their stretch marks. You can find it at the drug store.

Also go into the search engine and look up Brushing Skin. There are a couple of threads where people have brushed their skin to stimulate circulation and it seemed to help.
