What's so bad about lunch meat???

I eat lunchmeat all the time---at least 1-2/day--with cheese rolled in it.

I get it at Fred Meyer--only roast beef---0 carbs. I watch them slice it.

I didn't know it was bad. Why is it bad when it has 0 carbs???

Who said it was 'bad'? :) A lot of people recommend staying away from too much lunch meat because a lot of it is processed and high in sodium, which can cause water retention.

But, for my money, eat that fresh roast beef! :)

I agree. In general these meats can be full of hidden 'nasties'. But not all.

In my area the deli section of the large supermarkets keep a folder behind the counter which lists the nutritional analysis for all of the deli meats. It is updated each week.

Staff are happy for me to look at the folder.

Although one was a bit surprised when she said

"If its for a diet, we have the low fat meats marked".

and I replied

"Yes it is for a diet, now give me 1/2 a kilogram of that Salami and a kilogram of that bacon"

Hee hee! Bet that stripped her gears a bit! It's right up there with saying, "Yes, It's for a diet...can I have 3 pounds of butter please and do you have any more whipping cream back there?" :D

I believe the big fear is the nitrates. They are used in the curing process to keep deli meats looking "pink and fresh". Without nitrates bacon & sandwich meats would look grey. Its feared that nitrates consumed too frequently could become carinogenic.

The kind of deli meat I get is where they take the big, round slap of beef and slice it. They have the info on nutrition right there--I looked at it--but only for the carbs. I guess I will look more closely next time.

Lunchmeat is my friend. My new favorites are capacola and sun dried tomato turkey.
Of course I'll have a new favorite by next week:P
