Menstrual cycle, PCOS, and Provera
 

I've been low-carbing nearing five months now. Almost everything about my health is better. The one problem is that I have not had a period. All of my PCOS symptoms have been lessened, especially insulin/hypoglycemia problems. I was on hormones before going low-carb but decided that I didn't want to be on them after due to the major improvement in my health. I also am on the path toward natural living wherein I don't put non-natural substances into my body (except that I'm still on Glucophage and Aldactone for PCOS). Otherwise, my diet is essentially Neanderthin with dairy allowances.

I saw my gyno today and she said that if I don't get a period within two months that she wants to jump start my system with Provera. She said that should give me a period. If I do not get regular cycles after, she said every six months she wants me to go on Provera.

Has anyone else been on Provera? I would really like to hear about experiences.

I'm on Provera right now. I started Glucophage about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and I'm on Day 7 of a 10 day dosage of Provera. I have heard that it's pretty harsh on the body, and that once you've finished taking the 10 days of it, you have a very intense period. I'm *so* looking forward to that (ha!). --Jenn

I have taken provera before...I am 25 years old and I have taken it three times and it was due to no ovulation for a period of 2 years...I had a very normal 5 day period(not heavy or light)it was pretty moderate...well that was what happened a couple of months ago when I took it...the time before I took it and found out that it increases your chances of getting pregnant and of course I got pregnant with my son who is now 5...My menstral cycle was normal for a couple of years after his birth(well as normal as I ever had..Once every 2 months and lasting about 3-4 days very light) SO I defiantly recommend using protection when you take it because I was told I would most likely never have kids and look at me now with a beautiful 5 year old son...Well as far as the medicine provera goes its good to take...It can jump start you period once you take it...but I have to say the last time I took it...I had my period that month and haven't seen any sign of it since...Well good luck

Hi Happygrrl-- Good to know that your periods weren't heavy and painful after the Provera. Hope I have the same experience! :)

Hmm, I'm still kind of nervous about taking it. Prior to medication for PCOS, me periods were very heavy and painful. I wonder if Provera will give me the same type of period now. Whatever the case, my options are really limited. I would like to ovulate and me somewhat normal. Argh, I hate PCOS. It complicates everything.

Hey Shazzer...I understand what you are saying about painful periods...I was so excited when I stopped having them but I knew it wasn't good for my body...I waited 2 years to go the doctor the 1st time and I had a pap done it came back abnormal...So they put me on this and I got pregnant that month...During the birth of my child my weight didn't go up at all...I started at 189 and date of delivery I was 189 since I lost alot of pounds in 1st 3-4 months..Well fast forward a couple of years and I was in the same situation with my 2 years w/o period...Doctor put me on provera and I had probably the most comfortable period ever...And the last time I took it just a couple of months I had a fairly comfortable period...when I say fairly I mean I did cramp a little but it wasn't anything to stress over...My normal period were so bad that I was put on darvocet to ease the pain and I stayed in bed at least 1-2 days with a heating pad...With the medicine it just seems different...I did have a skin breakout a day or 2 after taking the provera (I HATE ACNE) but all in all it is not near as bad as I expected...I don't know what it will be like for you because everyone is different...

My mom for instance is taking provera and the 1st time she took it she said she felt so bad and she said she was going to keep taking it because her moods had gotten better(instead of 4-7 good days a month she went to 4-5 bad days which were right before her period) she stayed on it and next month things started getting better she said it is the 1st time in her adult life that she has had normal periods...she said she use to have to run to the bathroom in the morn and would still make a mess because it was so heavy but now she said she can walk...so her bleeding is lighter and her moods are better...she even said she doesn't cramp but about 1 day per month...I think that was how I did also...cramped 1 day and it wasn't unbearable

Oh and by the way I am 25 years old and my mom is 41 if that helps...I seen you were my age.

I hope you can decide on what to do because even if you do risk having a bad period it is better that getting cancer from not ever having a period...I wish you the most of luck with this...PCOS is very aggravating but you defiantly need to get that taken care of. GOOD LUCK

I will never, ever take Provera again unless it's life or death. I was having NO Period, and my gyno kept saying "It will jump start your system... blah blah blah". Well, finally agreed after not having a period for 9 months, and I had a period for a solid 60 days!!! It was heavy too although I didn't have cramps. Aside from all of that, my hormones were out of wack and I cried a lot! So, after almost 2 months, my doctor had to put me BACK on the Provera to make me STOP my period. It was really bad. I finally went back on birth control not long after that, just b/c I was so messed up. I lost 57 pounds, started taking Glucophage, got off of my birth control pill, and now I'm 5 weeks pregnant. All thanks to me and my fertility specialist, not my gyno. She had no clue about PCOS, nor did she know anything about how to treat it. I have heard good experiences with Provera; however, I wanted to tell you about mine! Good luck!

This recently, my doctor prescribed me glucophase (500mg) and Provera.

I am required to take those, because I have insulin resistant and missed periods.

I am wondering , are these type of pills worth to take ?

Please tell.

I have a really bad breakouts for years , since i was 17.

Mom told me its probably my missed periods that can cause it.

Is that right?

I wouldn't take provera, EVER. Synthetic hormones are scary; find yourself a compounding pharmacy and get some bio-identical hormones. My daughter has had terrible acne outbreaks her whole life, apparently, in part, due to the PCOS. She has been using Proactiv for about three years now and her skin is beautiful! She would not eat before she would run out of it!

PCOS and Provera
 

I've been taking Provera now for 3 months in hopes to help me ovulate and of course to give me a normal menstrual cycle. I have PCOS along with all the symptoms that go along with it. I was diagnosed at 15 and am now 26 will no luck in pregnancy. I have tried daily fertility injections without luck and and taking Provera to induce my cycle. Does anyone have any words of hope or advice for me?
