Virgin Coconut Oil - Brand
I bought some coconut oil to fry with yesterday.
It doesn't say VIRGIN coconut oil. It comes in a jar made by Spectrum Naturals. The jar states it's expeller pressed Organic Coconut oil. Below that is says Refined for medium high heat. The ingredients say 100 % mechanically (expeller) pressed naturally refined organic coconut oil. Anyone know of a good brand and where to purchase it? Is this brand fine? :daze: |
Trader Joe's carries their own brand of Organic Coconut Oil. Do you have a Trader Joe's near you? Also, most health food stores carry it.
The one I have is not a liquid but the organic expeller pressed refined coconut oil. Hope this helps. |

Yes I do, never thought about looking there. However I did find some at the GNC health store. It's not the liquid it's the expeller pressed. Same as the other brand I bought, only one says VIRGIN on it, the other doesn't. Same ingredients. So I guess what I bought in the first place would of worked just as well. :daze: Thanks Micker84 |

Spectrum has two types of coconut oil
http://www.spectrumorganics.com/index.php?id=87#j0 There's nothing wrong with what you bought. :) Here's some more information on how to choose Spectrum oils http://www.spectrumorganics.com/index.php?id=35 Karen |
hi
refined is bad. i am using the spectrum unrefined right now but it's really hard to find. i think the trader joes one is refined because it doesn't say unrefined and it's really really cheap.

http://www.spectrumorganics.com/index.php?id=35 Karen, thank you so much for taking time to post this information. It's very helpful. :D about the refined coconut oil. i feel really bad after eating it and my eyes get a yellow glaze shortly after consuming it. Kay3osu Wow that's not good :( I fried with it using 1/2 tblspn and no problems. Are there any other posters out there who have experienced any side effects after cooking with refined coconut oil? i am using the spectrum unrefined right now but it's really hard to find Do you remember where you purchased your unrefined? I just ran a search on the link that Karen inserted. It lists the stores that should be carrying both, refined and unrefined. However, I don't know how true this hold up with grocery stores. |
An oil that has been refined by filtering is much different than one has gone through some bizarre chemical extraction and harsh deoderizing process, for example Crisco or Mazola oil.
I find the information from the site pretty objective, but, to each his own. :) Quote:

I have tried all types of coconut oils and this one is the best. Go to the website and check it out. |
The more refined any product is the worse it is for your body.
Foods that are natural are harder to digest have a higher caloric cost. In other works if takes calories for the body to process it then there are less "net" calories to that food. Celery basically has negative calories because it takes more energy to eat it than it has. Good low carb hi fiber foods with great caloric costs are Asparagus Brocolli, Cabbage Califlower Celery Lettuce Mushrooms Radiccio Radish and Spinach. Eating these foods will help speed up your metabolism. I just like to eat as close to nature as possible. (Less refining) Let your body do the digestive work and burn the calories. OK VCO probably doesn't matter as much as far as caloric cost, but it is just my philosophy. Deep huh! :) Jag |
