Tuna from a can???

As per some suggestions on this forum, I am trying to cut out processed foods. I am in my second week of induction. I was just wondering, since tuna comes out of a can, is it considered processed? Should I stay away from it or is it ok? I love tuna salad and have been making it everyday for lunch!

Thanks!

I just had a look at a can of tuna: 'Tuna, water, salt' it said. No sugar, no nitrates no crap. I think you can regard it as unprocessed.

When you get a chance, buy tuna in a bag. It's vacuum-sealed at a lower temperature and tastes much fresher. Plus there isn't all that oil or water to drain or dilute the flavor.

I like my cans, cheap (the ones I buy, lol) and no preservatives. Oh and beachmum, I am not a fan of fish so I usually add water and drain it a few times to take away the flavor, haha.

Canned tuna is made from the smaller, younger fish that have a low mercury content (because they are young).

Big tuna steaks, on the other hand, come from older fish that have accumulated more mercury.

I just want to find a brand without MSG... after reading the CAD healthy heart book, and seeing all the names it's hidden under....,grrr>

gotbeer, that tuna info is good to know. Makes me feel better to know I am not ingesting that mercury,

Potatofree, do you remember any of the other names for MSG? I remember diet pills and other things used to have a bunch of different names for ephedrine, funny how they can get away with that?

potatofree Mon, Jan-19-04 22:14

I can't remember the whole list, but "broth" is a common one, hydrolyzed protien... My sister has my book, but there were about 20 different variations... basically be suspicious of anything other than "tuna, water and salt"...

i also love canned tuna - just have to be careful about how much you eat due to high mercury content esp in the albacore.

I eat a lot of can tuna and chicken. My local Dollar General sales can chicken Sweet Sue brand for $1 a can that much better than the grocery store.

Good Luck,
Kat
