Off wall question

My daughter has been loving the hoamde yogurt I've been doing. They say though that you shouldn't give dairy to little ones (she's 10 months old). I also read where keifer is better for young children and pregnant women because of the left turning bacteria.

So here was my idea. Why don't I try making keifer for her using baby formula as a base. They can make yogurt from soy milk which has even less lactose then formula, so there is something there for the starter to react to. The keifer would also have all the fat, iron and healthy stuff in the formula.

Is there any reason I shouldn't give it a go? Does anyone think it could be a bad idea, or know something about keifer or formula that could make it bad for her?

I say go for it, can't hurt to try!

I got the go ahead from my ped to give my 8 month old yogurt at his last well baby check. Up until I started making my own homemade yogurt, I was feeding him YoBaby whole milk yogurt with no problems.

Let me know how it goes if you try it!

I have no idea if formula would turn into yogurt. That would be an interesting experiment. Our ped actually told us to start giving our son yogurt at 9 months old (he's 13 months now). But he had just gotten over a bad stomach virus and couldn't handle the milk. We switched to soy yogurt, and he LOVES it! It comes in all flavors. We get it at Trader Joe's or the healthfood store.

Let me know if you can make yogurt from formula. Also, if you can, let us know if she likes it. That would be interesting to hear about!

Take care,
Bonnie

Bonzlee, be careful with the soy yogurt. Soy allergies and built up soy allergies are very common. For awhile soy formula was very popular for babies that couldn't tolerate milk but many couldn't tolerate the soy after awhile either and the symptoms are not always what you might expect in an adult allergic reaction. I don't mean to be an alarmist. Just be aware.

I believe they don't want you to give a baby cow's milk before 12 months of age, but yoghurt is ok around 8 months, so is cheese.

Everything I've read says yogurt and keifer are ok for babies. I have bveen giving it to her without any problem.

The trouble is she has a ton of dirty diapers, and a diaper rash that keeps coming back. I don't think it's related to the dairy at all because she gets it even when not getting a bit of dairy and before she started table foods. I do notice it is much worse on days she has any kind of baby cereal, so I'm starting to wonder if those are the problems.

The formula is more for the nutrients and higher fat in the formula compaired to milk. My worry though is formula goes bad so fast I wonder if keeping it at room temp while it cultures could make it dangerous.
